HERE'S how bad off the Democrats are: They're cowering behind closed doors, whispering that if it should ever turn out that Republicans are behind this, it would be so exquisitely Machiavellian, so beyond what Democrats are capable of, they should just fold and concede the election now before the Republicans have to go to the trouble to steal it again.
There's no evidence it's just a preposterous, paranoid fantasy at this point. But it speaks to the jitters of the Democrats that they're consumed with speculation about whether Karl Rove, the master of dirty tricks and surrogate sleaze, could have set up CBS in a diabolical pre-emptive strike to undermine damaging revelations about Bush 43's privileged status and vanishing act in the National Guard, and his odd refusal to take his required physical when ordered.
In this vast left-wing conspiracy theory, Rove takes real evidence on W.'s shirking and transfers it to documents doomed to be exposed as phony (thereby undermining the real goods), then funnels it through third parties to Dan Rather, Bush 41's nemesis on Iran-contra. A perfect bank shot.
The secretary for W.'s squadron commander in the Texas Guard told The Times that the information in the disputed memos is correct it's just the memos that seem fake.
"It looks like someone may have read the originals and put that together,' said a lucid 86- year-old Marian Carr Knox, who was flown up to New York Wednesday by beleaguered CBS News executives.
She told Rather that her boss, Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, wrote a "cover-your-back file,' a "personal journal' to keep a record about the politically connected Bush in his charge. She said the contents of that mirrored the CBS documents, but she said those documents were not on the right forms and contained Army terms rather than Air National Guard argot. She confirmed that young Bush had disobeyed a direct order from Killian to take a physical.
'It was a big no-no to not follow orders,' she said, adding that the Bush scion's above-the- rules attitude caused some snickers and resentment among fellow officers.
Those who suspect Rove note that when he was Bill Clements' campaign strategist in a 1986 governor's race in Texas, he was accused of bugging his own office to distract from a debate, according to James Moore and Wayne Slater, authors of "Bush's Brain.' They said it turned the election because after that, the Democrat could not get any attention.
Was the same scenario playing out Wednesday evening on CNN? After a five-minute report on the CBS memo controversy, CNN spent about 30 seconds reporting that two more Marines had been killed in Iraq.
House Republicans started clamoring for a congressional inquiry into the documents used by "60 Minutes,' saying it might be an attempt to manipulate the election. (Isn't that what the Democrats are scared the Republicans are doing?)
These same Republicans never wanted investigations into missing WMD, why Congress passed a Medicare bill based on faulty figures, Abu Ghraib or even whether those Swiftie guys were lying, for Pete's sake.
The Democratic paranoia is a measure of the intimidation the West Wing is wielding in a race where John Kerry can't seem to take advantage of any of the Bush administration's increasingly calamitous blunders.
The administration has been so dazzling in misleading the public with audacious, mendacious malarkey that the Democrats fear the Bushies are capable of any level of deceit.
Iraq is a vision of hell, and the Republicans act as if it's a model kitchen. The president and vice president brag about liberating Iraqis and reassure us that they are stopping terrorist violence at its source and inspiring democracy in the region by bringing it to blood-drenched Iraq.
But what they haven't mentioned is that they have known since July that their rosy scenarios are as bogus as their WMD. That's when the president received a national intelligence estimate that spelled out "a dark assessment of prospects for Iraq' in the next 18 months, as Douglas Jehl writes in Thursday's New York Times. Worst-case estimates include civil war or anarchy.
Unlike the president, the young men and women trying to stay alive in the unraveling chaos of Iraq can't count on their daddies to get them out of the line of fire.
I started reading this and was thinking "well, this sort of has some facts in it, but their twisted, and it doesn't really make any sense."
Then I looked up and realized it was by maureen dowd.

To me, the 'Rats' paranoia and willingness to treat every unproven accusation against their political opponents as fact, traits Dowd clearly shares, is a very unhealthy combination when the objective is to get at the truth.

Clarification - my son is not in Iraq, but is in the Navy. Maybe she didn't mean to insult all of our military personnel; just the ones in Iraq.
Everyone says they'd like to have a few beers with President Bush, which is kinda silly, since he no longer drinks. I think I'd wanna go to a baseball game with him, though I have a preference to little league over watching the pros. He does that T-ball thing, so I don't think he'd mind.
Anyway, back to having that beer. I'd love to quaff a few with Karl Rove, cuz anyone who inspires the reactions I've seen from Democrats would be someone interesting to talk to.

Poor Mo-dodo doesn't seem to realize that the guilty parties have already been identified, and they're all DemocRATS. Bush DID fulfill his obligations, unlike Kerry who still owes us 8 months in SE Asia. And somebody at the Times should tell her that the US military is 100% volunteers.

So we have the word of this "lucid" 86 year old Democrat that Bush's superior officer was accustomed to venting frustration over political influence in the military to someone who could rat him out to his "political" superior.Doug from Upland has it right - if CBS wants to look evenhanded it need do no more than tell the truth about Kerry as assiduously as it has publicized fiction about Bush. Starting with the fact that Bush has signed a Standard Form 180 and Kerry has not, but also giving each member of the SBVT as much of a hearing as they have given this nice little old lady.
What does it say about the state of the liberal media and the Kerry campaign that one of the most 'respected' liberal columnists devotes a column to propagating a conspiracy theory so pitifully far-fetched that even the least-stable of Art Bell's late night crowd would laugh it off the air?

Not voting this year because Bush and the Repubs have shifted too far to the left for me. However, I have been following this Rathergate thing as sort of a neutral observer. This conspiracy theory the Dems have come up with makes sense. Consider: Karl Rove generates some cheap, obviously forged documents and surreptitiously feeds them to CBS, knowing they'll be STUPID enough to run with it.
I bet they keep JFKerry in a rubber room at night replaying his "reenactment" films. There is no way they can let him see Maureen is depressed.
And there you have Maureen Dowd's hard-hitting evidence of Karl Rove being a dirty trickster. Third-hand rumor from two left-wing hacks concerning an 18-year-old election.

That's a regretful hindsight scenario; Rove could never risk discovery in such a scheme. The issue and the facts are stark: CBS either knowingly presented false documents in an effort to undermine a sitting president, or they violated a first principle in journalism by not confirming their accuracy before reporting (which would be just as heinous, IMHO).
The situation is indicative ONLY of CBS' malfeasance. Throwing a conspiracy theory out about Rove distracts from the underlying issue: CBS News is either villainous or incompetent.
Somehow I doubt this--if that were the case, then Rove would've had to funnel the docs through a democrat go-between that Rather/CBS "trusted." But if it came from the right and Rather/CBS even so much as suspected it, he would've come clean about it asap. No, it's more likely it came from the dem side and he's being defiant 'cause he doesn't want to hurt Kerry/his daughter/the DNC and cement his reputation for good as a democratic stooge.

What's most telling to me about the depth of desperation is that Dowdy-doo has not put in her usual glut of silly-simile, mendacious-metaphor and drunken drivel. It seems that even she can't be bothered too much with entertaining the elite (s)nobility. (Gee, I guess anyone CAN do it at home).

This article is so disjointed, dishonest and rambling that it isn't worth responding to. Just that so far no one has noted that she casually slanders Karl Rove based on absolutely no evidence.
If there was even the least truth to this assertion, the first step would be for CBS to disclose its source for the forgery and begin to unravel the chain of forgery back to its source. Why isn't Ms. Dowd calling for CBS to reveal their source?
Since Ms. Dowd, Dan Rather and Terry MacAuliffe all realize that the forger is incalculably more likely to have ties to the Democratic Party than the Republicans, unraveling this incredibly inept hoax is not something that they actually want to do. They will continue to make snide innuendos about Karl Rove, but avoid any actions which might uncover the true author of this juvenal stunt.

That's why on the day of the interview with her CBS kept moving up the broadcast time. They were busy prepping her to make sure she got her story straight.
To say that she is objective would be a down right lie.
Her quote that "Bush was selected not elected" proved that and in my opinion made worthless her statement that the memo's content was accurate about how Bush's commander felt about him.
More accurate and pertinent were statements by the commander's widow and son saying that he had great respect for Lt. Bush's abilities.
Commanding Officers don't discuss other officers with a pool secretary.
