RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie Statement on CBS
RNC ^ | 9/20/2004 | Christine Iverson

Posted on 09/20/2004 12:43:50 PM PDT by rwilliam

Washington, DC--Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie issued the following statement on CBS’s admission today that memos regarding the President’s National Guard service are not real.

“We accept CBS's apology for a breach of the journalistic standards that provide the American people confidence in news organizations, but some disturbing questions remain unanswered.

“CBS has now answered questions about the authenticity of the documents but questions remain surrounding who created the documents, who provided them to CBS and if Senator Kerry's supporters, Party committee, or campaign played any role.

“Did Bill Burkett, Democrat activist and Kerry campaign supporter, who passed information to the DNC, work with Kerry campaign surrogate Max Cleland? Did Bill Burkett's talks with ‘senior’ Kerry campaign officials include discussions of the now discredited documents? Was the launch of the Democrat National Committee's Operation Fortunate Son designed with knowledge of the faked forged memos? Terry McAuliffe said yesterday that no one at the DNC or Kerry campaign, ‘had anything to do with the preparations of the documents,’ but what about the distribution or dissemination?

“In an effort to regain the trust of the American people CBS should not only investigate the process that led to the use of these documents but they should identify immediately those engaged in possible criminal activity who attempted to use a news organization to affect the outcome of a Presidential election in its closing days.”

Y'all should check out DU if you're in need of a good laugh. They have formed a circular firing squad. Some true believers still insist the memos are authentic (that's too much for even most DUers) and are defending Burkett as a great patriot. There is also an "authentic re-creations" splinter faction. Sure enough some think Rove planned the whole thing. Most seem to be in a snit with Rather for taking the focus away from Kerry's brilliance on the issues. There are significant numbers who are now defeatist. One or two even mentioned Cleland as a possible smoking gun (grenade?).

"They are now fabricating a plan to finger a low level operator"

Yes, there will have to be a fallguy, but the question is, who will "roll over" for a soon-to-be-loser like Kerry?
Forget CBS. They're on their own.

These punks are true rats who won't go down easily. They know too much. Can Head Punk McAuliffe call upon the Clintons' powers of persuasion... It gets better as it goes...

BTW, I only have a little bit of saffron left to steam with my rice. I went to Ralph's and Vons and can't find it:( I am a great paella cook and have everything else waiting for me to do something.

A little saffron goes a long way.... but now you are making ME hungry... perhaps some cardamom ice cream as a palate cleanser... emmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Is it Bush's fault?:):)

-- Of course it is... hehehe.. As far as the left is concerned, he was born with a rap sheet.

-- But, if it wasn't Bush = anti-christ, it would be X = anti-christ.. and the left doesn't even like to talk about the totally un-nuanced reality of good and evil. Evil only exists in those that differ with their POV and their death-grip on power.

"It is the most spectacular reversal of intended effect of a smear campaign I have seen in my lifetime."

'Tis a beautiful thing. I relish the image of a couple of terrorist bombmakers blowing themselves up in their apartment.

I don't know if that's funny or something else. Cleland got blown up when he picked up a high explosive after jumping off a helicopter that only landed for a beer run.

I'm not checking out the wackos on DU. YOU keep us current:)

Near election day the two become linked.

And it is my belief (with no evidence, yet) that the the connection was the other guardsman that was mentioned in one of the memos. Since these documents were just fabricated, why is that name there? Is it just window dressing? I think if these plan had gone to fruition, something would have come out of the swamp about him that would scream "drugs"

I want to know what role ABC had/may have had in this conspiracy since the other two seem embedded with the DNC. Could be why ABC is hot on the trail of CBS, to cover up a role they might have had.

ABC is not monolithic, there may be a producer or two who are acting as a mole, and planting the relevant stories.

Now that it has hit the fan, however, Petah and friends are not about to go down with someone who is as much a competitor as a colleague.

Hello,

I am beginning to think they will die a slow painful death. Initially, had Danny Boy and others at the top of the CBS food-chain handled this differently, this would have passed. We would have heard about the Right Wing Bloggers, and how they "got" this so quickly (Mr. Bill O'Reilly come to mind?). But... too much arrogance, way too much invested (politically and emotionally) and we have arrived here.

Glad to be here (wouldn't miss this train wreck for the world), MOGirl

"The RNC Chairman raises some important questions. I'm sure Dan Rather will get right on it, and conduct a thorough, tenacious and independent investigation into the truth."

In fact, Dan is consulting with OJ Simpson even as we speak to get tips on finding the "real" perpetrator!

I think they were going to drag out more "evidence" has time went on.

Ping to 128, above.

"My thought/theory on this is that the networks probably use questionable 'evidence' on stories pretty frequently, as a normal way of doing business."

Considering the ease with which they colluded with the Clinton crime family, and how readily they smeared the human race with "they all do it," I think your theory is accurate.

Which means this fiasco may have a sobering effect on a lot of news-hacks for some time. It leads to the prediction that we won't see as much sensational gotcha "journalism" for awhile.

I gave up sweets, but I can make up a lot of Sangria with all those little fruity things swimming around. And I only use olive oil for cooking. I'm also missing something else.. I can't find squid big enough to make calamares with. When I lived in Spain, they looked like big onion rings. Here, they look like...well, use your imagination:):)

Off topic, but since we discussed this earlier...

Origin of the word  Pajamahadeen

Coined by Jim Geraghty of NRO's KerrySpot :

"Sure, the Sauronic Big Eye of CBS is on the verge of being toppled by the Pajamahadeen."

He is now known as Pajama bin Bloggin

Cleland got blown up

Yeah I know. That's why I altered "smoking gun" to "hand grenade." In poor taste maybe, but I could not resist.

However, his injuries occurred, Cleland was severely wounded in Vietnam. That's always tragic, no matter one's politics. But I am very tired of sKerry and other RATs always wheeling Cleland out and screaming about how those nasty Republicans "questioned Max Cleland's patriotism." And I am disappointed that Cleland lets himself be used that way.

I am not questioning his patriotism, but I do question his judgment, and his dignity for allowing himself and his disabilities to be used that way. He has gone from being an inspiration to people with disabilities, and from all that I have read a fine man, to some sort of sideshow freak. And he now faces ethics questions and a possible criminal investigation. Bitterness is a terrible disease.

"I understand Kerry gave some kind of 'major speech' today."

Yeah...all about our failures in Iraq; it was accentuated with the beheading of an American civilian by the Iraqi wing of the Kerry campaign.

Wouldn't be surprised if John McCain was involved. His appearance on Fox News Sunday was disgusting. He is not over losing to Bush in 2000 and he never will be. Weasel.

I highly doubt McCain would be involved on any level.
Lets not lose sight of our focus by casting the net too wide.

We must work to expose a solid connection between these memos, the Kerry campaign, and the DNC's orchestrated "fortunate son" offensive.

I suggest calling it "Opperation: Fortunate Forgery" for now own.

We must make sure the MSM follows these leads. Trying to tie McCain to it out of some personal displeasure with his RINOness is not advantageous and only muddies the water. It also undermines the work the rest of us are doing.

I should hate to have our work discredited by loony posts about McCain or Hillary Clinton conspiracy theories.
