BODY:

Hawthorn pulled the chain out, showing it to jurors during cross examination of a police detective just a few hours into testimony Wednesday. In doing so, he stole a moment used to great dramatic effect by the prosecution in closing stages of the King and Brewer trials.

Berry's trial began as two pre-trial distractions came to an end.

First, State District Judge Joe Bob Golden denied a last-minute defense motion to move the trial from Jasper, about 125 miles northeast of Houston, because of intense media coverage and jury prejudice.

Later, CBS News agreed to provide a transcript of the complete interview between Berry and anchor Dan Rather, portions of which aired on "60 Minutes II" on Sept. 28. It also was posted on the company's Web site, www.cbs.com.

Prosecutors had subpoenaed CBS producer Mary Mapes and ordered her to bring the video and transcript of the outtakes. Golden twice found Ms. Mapes in contempt of court and ordered her jailed for failing to hand over both items.

Two Texas appeals courts upheld the lower court's ruling, and Ms. Mapes avoided jail when the network agreed to provide the transcript and a witness to verify its authenticity...

Someone needs to photoshop Little Miss Mapes with a pair of undies on her head and fake documents in her hand.

Mapes' husband (a reporter for Dallas Morning News) gushes over Kennedy:

BYLINE: MARK WROLSTAD; THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS

DATELINE: DALLAS

BODY:
SOME OF THE THOUSANDS of notes written by visitors to Dealey Plaza after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 have been stored in the Dallas Public Library. A few of the authors recall what prompted them to write.

DALLAS - Grief, respect and curiosity began beckoning them here almost before the shots stopped echoing off the brick and asphalt and the grassy slopes that Friday at the noon hour. They came to the suddenly infamous little downtown Dallas park to see it for themselves, this place where their president had been ripped away and everything had changed in one terrible instant.

In the days after Nov. 22, 1963 - lasting through the summer of '64 - Dealey Plaza was transformed into a roadside shrine, as mourners carpeted both sides of Elm Street with flowers, scribblings and tributes to John F. Kennedy.

Perhaps the most momentous event on American soil during the American Century slides deeper into history now. A defining moment of time and place for all who recall it has moved to a different place in the nation's living memory.

Those who were young are now approaching middle age, and the middle-aged have grown old.

After 35 years, the pilgrimages continue. From every corner of the nation and globe, people come to honor a fallen leader, to remember the hopes and fears of another age and to brush up against what for many is an unsolvable mystery.

Although the decades have muted America's anguish, it's still evident in writings composed when the sorrow and dismay were fresh.

She must stay away from cameras because this is the only pic I could find:

It was on a page with a story about the Jasper incident so I'm pretty sure it's her.

Berry got life; King and Brewer got death.

Berry claimed King and Brewer threatened "to do the same thing" to him. Berry did wet his pants during the time they were killing Byrd.

A lot of Jasper's blacks testified FOR Berry. I don't remember what was on the tape.

Here's Mapes hubby gleefully celebrating the demise of some Christians...

Are we starting to get the idea with this couple?

HEADLINE: TELEVANGELIST'S DIVORCE COULD SINK MINISTRY;
TILTON A VIOLENT DRUNK, WIFE SAYS

BYLINE: By MARK WROLSTAD Dallas Morning News

DATELINE: DALLAS

BODY:
Robert Tilton and Leigh Valentine forged separate high-profile careers as charismatic Christians before a life-changing encounter sparked their union in marriage and ministry.

But the crossing paths of two evangelical stars led to a star-crossed partnership.

Their two-year marriage - the second for each - has disintegrated into a nasty divorce, raising allegations against Tilton of violent rages and cruelty, drinking binges and infidelity, - and innuendos about both preachers' mental states.

The charges against Tilton are "damn lies," said his attorney and friend, J.C. Joyce.

"If he was that bad, why didn't she sue HIM for divorce?" Joyce said. "Bob Tilton is the one who filed for this divorce."

The split raises more questions about Tilton's future. Formerly among the country's best-known televangelists, he has been targeted by religious-fraud lawsuits for nearly five years, yet hopes to return to TV preaching.

His second divorce in less than three years threatens to further damage the Word of Faith Family Church he founded 19 years ago in suburban Farmers Branch, Texas. Through scandal, divorce and changing theology, Sunday attendance has shrunk to a few hundred for a ministry whose telecasts and fund-raising once blanketed North America.

Leigh Valentine Tilton charges that after their secret wedding in February 1994 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, her husband became an increasingly abusive, alcohol-fueled adulterer, haunted by nightmarish visions and delusions of grandeur.

"There's a cruel side to Bob that I never saw before," said Leigh Tilton, adding that she does not want to hurt him and reluctantly made the allegations to protect herself and her 3-year-old son, Joshua. "Bob is just not being reasonable right now."

Joyce derided her statements.

"All these naked comments don't mean anything in the world," he said. "They'll be contested. This is just a typical divorce."

But the divorce is not typical in its celebrity power...

Wow! Mary Mapes disobeyed a direct order! from a Superior (court) Officer!

Trying to keep the Dragger of James Byrd out of trouble. Obviously a racist Klanswoman.

Jasper trial #3 will not move, but CBS does

Judge Joe Bob Golden rejected a motion for change of venue in the dragging death trial of Shawn Berry.
Golden ruled that the motion was filed by Berry's attorney to delay the trial.
With this ruling the way was cleared for the Jasper County jury to hear opening arguments.
In another note from Jasper, CBS producer Mary Mapes will not be going to jail. CBS attorneys and Jasper county prosecutors negotiated late into the night to reach a compromise.
CBS agreed to post the transcript of the interview on its web site and provide a copy of the transcript to Jasper county officials. In return Mapes would not go to jail and the tapes would not need to be provided.

Yep, her father said she got into journalism because she had an axe to grind, not because of journalism itself...yes, saw this reported on Fox tonight - her father said he was "ashamed" of what she had become, also said she was a radical feminist who was trying to push her own agenda instead of adhering to journalistic standards - sounds about right......

Thanks for posting her picture. Your search was better than mine! I found '0'.

For someone so involved in all the devious stuff she does - it's amazing her face is not plastered everywhere.

Guess the MSM protect their own slimes.

Sounds like Mapes would be a perfect match for CNN. Fit right in there with their previous stars.....like Peter Arnett.

"Mary Mapes broke Abu Graib with help of Hackworth."

Those pics, from what I have read, were 'evidence' in an on going investigation, somebody leaked from within government.

CBS continues to be the benefactor of much "leakage" from within in government. My first guess would be Congress.

My pleasure. She needs to have an investigative news crew camped outside her front door for a few weeks to see how it feels.

Why hasn't anybody interviewed her yet? If she was a Republican they would be chasing her down the street with cameras and microphones all the way to work and back every day .
