The Truth About Rifle Statistics (NY)
New York Post ^ | September 20, 2004 | FREDRIC U. DICKER

NEW YORKERS are at least four times as likely to be punched to death than to be killed with an assault-style rifle, unpublished state crime statistics show.

The eye-opening figures — obtained by The Post from the state Division of Criminal Justice Services — reveal that New Yorkers are also at least twice as likely to be clubbed to death than shot dead by an attacker wielding one of the semi-automatic rifles previously covered by a federal government ban that expired last week.

The most recent statewide statistics — murder-by-weapon-type figures from 2002 — also show that New Yorkers are at least five times as likely to be stabbed to death with a knife than they are to be shot with an assault rifle.

No surprise here. It's not like the expired AWB (or New York's existing ban)is about effectiveness anyhoo. It was (is) all about politics.

I thought New York had ordinances dealing with club registration to reduce clubbing deaths?

There are probably a million unlicensed weapons on the streets of NYC alone.

Yet law abiding citizens are not allowed to arm themselves unless they have a job transporting valuables or have friends in the government.

They will have to pry my fist from my cold, dead, assault rifle.

When will NY repeal their own AWB? Too bad they didn't sunset it along with the Feds.

I really wish New York would secede from the City before it's too late.* Most of the people in New York are decent, honest, intelligent people... please don't mistake those in New York with those in New York City who impose their will on the rest of the fine state ('though I admit that the motto "The Empire State" is probably fitting as it currently exists). *"too late" because the rest of the state is being overrun by those fleeing Gotham.

"Of 893 murders committed two years ago, just 22 — or slightly over 2 percent — were carried out using some form of rifle, including assault-rifles, the figures show."

Our murder rate from hands and feet alone is larger than most developed countries' total rate.

New Yorkers are more likely to be killed by Hillary's pantsuit or renegade protesters than by an assault rifle.

I am surprised there are even that many being killed by people using so called assault rifles.

I suspect they are including many rifles which are not even covered by the previous ban.

Ah, but will the nerf-brained liberals say that this is proof that banning works? (Of course, a quick check showing the same or better ratios exist in states without bans will refute them, but since when has truth or logic stopped a good Lefty self-congratulatory rant?)

Of course it's the ban working! It couldn't possibly be because your average miscreant isn't willing/able to shell out $1,000 for a rifle that he can't possibly conceal anyway.

You'd think with a Republican governor we'd have some hope wouldn't you? Nope, it'll never happen. Pataki is a stinkin' two-timing RINO!

You guys have missed something that has DU in a tizzy right now. They are saying someone name Roger Stone is behind the forged CBS documents. It is buried at the end of the New York Post article linked to in this thread.

Here is what it reads:

The hot rumor in New York political circles has Roger Stone, the longtime GOP activist, as the source for Dan Rather's dubious Texas Air National Guard "memos."

"The irony would be delicious, since Rather became famous confronting President Nixon, in whose service a very young Stone became associated with political "dirty tricks."

Reached at his Florida home, Stone had no comment. "
