In an interview Monday evening, a repentant Rather conceded it had been a mistake to broadcast the documents. But even though he could not vouch for their authenticity, he said he still did not believe that they were fakes.
"Do I think they're forged? No," Rather said.
"But it's not good enough to use the documents on the air if we can't vouch for them, and we can't vouch for them."
What kind of reporter would I be if I put something on the air in which I believed, and as soon as it's attacked and under pressure, you run, you fold, you fade, you side-wind? That's not the kind of person I am, and it's not the kind of reporter I am."

It's always been shakey journalism. The way 60 Minutes handled Love Canal debacle back in the 70s was a travesty. Hooker Chemical got pilloried in return for being willing to grant an interview while a lot of other worse offenders got off scott free. I would hate to know how many more notches in ol' Dan's microphone got similar treatment.
I don't hear that, but I do see an organ when I look at him.

Guess we won't be seeing Dan on reviewing stand next May Day. He'll be airbrushed out of all the CBS News promos. Hey, Dan, be real careful, watch out for cosmodrome fires, they kill a surprising number of politboro members, according to Pravda.
If he does not think they are forged it can only mean he STILL thinks they are legit. Because he should really answer "I don't know" given the fact that the documents can't be authenticated.

That comment by Rather should be brought back to the door of CBS.
They are continuing to promote a story based on proven faked documents. No one should be satisfied as a firest step until CBS announces the docs are fakes and indicates the story is not endorsed by them.
So when do we hold the first meeting of the Bernard Goldberg Society?
Where does Robin Rather fit into all of this? Is she the unimpeachable source?

I've been thinking about this a lot these last few days. We're pretty media savvy now, but think of the times in the past when we weren't. Especially Vietnam, but lord knows how many other things he's handled just like he's handled this one.
To me, it's one thing to believe they have misconstrued the news for their own agenda, but it's quite another to actually BE part of the "story" as we at FR have been these last two weeks and actually SEE how they do it.
It's confirmation in spades that they intend to bring down this country, IMO. I've said many times that all of these people -- Kerry, the media, the Clinton people, the DNC shills -- are the very people who tried to bring this country down in the 60's and are back to finish her off.
You nailed it. But he cannot possibly REALLY believe they are legit. He is PRETENDING that he believes they are legit. Why? Partly to keep the slime on Bush alive? And maybe to make it seem like he is innocently an idiot?
