Column: Bush hating is never a firm stance

Bush hating is very popular these days, particularly among those in Hollywood. It’s easy and there are only a few simple rules to follow. Take any issue, find some facet of that issue that could be construed in any way as being beneficial personally to George W. Bush, the more tangential the connection the better. Now just carry that thought through to its illogical conclusion.

For example, take the war in Iraq. Iraq has lots of oil. Dick Cheney worked for Halliburton. George Bush invaded Iraq to get Dick Cheney oil. See, pretty easy, and you didn’t even need to worry about facts.

Here’s another example: the Bin Laden family flies on a private jet the day after September 11. George Bush once met a member of the Bin Laden family. George Bush knew about 9/11 beforehand and was helping the Bin Laden family to escape. Sound crazy? A recent poll showed that a majority of New Yorkers believed that George Bush knew about the World Trade Center attacks prior to 9/11.

Here’s another: (The windup) Three large hurricanes hit Florida this year. (The pitch.) George Bush’s brother is the governor of Florida. (A home run.) George Bush had three hurricanes hit Florida so he and his brother could look good during relief effort photo-ops. Sound crazy? Just remember that Florida was the deciding state in the last election. Doesn’t sound so crazy now, does it?

When confronted with apparent holes in their logic, the Bush-hater has several tools for countering the attack. The easiest is to deflect the attack with “Bush stole the election,” or “you’re part of the vast right-wing conspiracy,” or “Bush was AWOL.” These also work well when questioned about John Kerry’s past. Dan Rather has been using the last one lately to answer questions about his apparently forged memos on George Bush’s guard duty. Rather has asserted that the content of the memos is correct even if they are indeed forgeries. Now there’s a real Bush-hater for you.

When attacked, the Bush-hater can add another level of intrigue to his or her tale. Michael Moore, the ultimate Bush-hater, has turned this tactic into an art form. In an interview on the Charlie Rose show, Moore talked about Bush’s master plan to get the oil out of Iraq. This elaborate scheme made the president out to be a maniacal genius. Rose asked Moore if he thought George Bush was stupid. Of course Moore, a college dropout, had to support this notion. But the two ideas — Bush the maniacal genius and Bush the moron — stood in stark contrast to each other. The two statements could not be left to stand together. Moore, a true maniacal genius, came up with the ultimate Bush-haters save. Dick Cheney — puppetmaster, pulling the strings to get all of the oil from Iraq for Halliburton. One could almost see Cheney swimming in Olympic-size pools of oil in his backyard somewhere in Wyoming.

A favorite Bush-hater game is to put the president into situations he cannot win. “George Bush has done nothing to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.” How about drilling for oil in Alaska? “George Bush is destroying the environment.” There’s quite a long list of these.

There is also simple transference. “We hate terrorists.” “We hate Bush.” “Bush is a terrorist.” This was a very popular theme for the protestors in New York. Judging by their signs, they should spend a little more time reading the newspaper and a little less time honing their Photoshop skills. Although, I’ll bet they could have done a much better job with CBS’s forged memos.

When all else fails, there is the good old-fashioned, straight-on personal attack. Al Gore rocketed to the top of the Bush-haters club a few weeks ago when he compared George Bush’s faith to “the same fundamentalist impulse that we see in Saudi Arabia.” Geez, that one’s enough to make even a Moore-on blush.

And the list goes on and on. Just turn on the evening news for the latest installment. You may wonder, is there any hope of curing this Bush-hating psychosis? Probably not, and judging by the weakness of the Democratic candidate, we’ll have four more years to study it.

"Moore, a true maniacal genius"

I say give credit where it's due, but Moore doesn't even make it. More like a fat boy filmmaker who wants attention.

I find that hard to believe.

"Just turn on the evening news for the latest installment"

LOL! Isn't that the truth! I don't think MSM knows how to tell the truth anymore. If they were interested in the truth, they would ask why John Kerry will not sign form 180 and release ALL his records and journals.

What is John Kerry hiding? Why doesn't he sign the Standard Form 180 and release his military service and medical records to the public?
