So, after years of sleepless nights thinking about this Bush-TANGle, Mapes ID's Burkett as just the kind of former Guard type to have and "get down and dirty with" such incriminating documents as would fit the agenda she's got in mind. Heck, Burkett was so gullible and willing, that one would only need to vaguely suggest a cover story and have Billy glom onto it, if it would take Bush down and get him a cushy patronage job into his golden years.

If anything should go wrong, Mary does plan to leave Burkett holding the bag, so Mary, as Lucy, tells Burkett where to receive the documents, but her husband or cohort actually gives them to her, lest Burkett recognize her.

The memos ham-fistedly contain known Army'isms, so as to implicate Burkett. Mary has hours of Burkett tape interview material from which to pour Burkett-sounding "orders." Mary's feminine (?), practiced handwriting pens Killian's signature.

Mary doesn't expect to have the forgery found out because she thinks the whole story will get the Wilson-Pflame and Clarke treatment - a discussion of characters and ideas, not of typography. If forgery eventually comes up, it'll be hung around Burkett's neck, long after the monkey has been on Bush's back long enough to shave him down a point or two in key battleground states come election day.

Things just didn't turn out like you expected, did they, Mary? Burkett now thinks Lucy just might've connived to set him up, just like Mary would've. Burkett's wondering how she's always been able to get that big story at CBS, like they've been saying recently, so that liar wants to sue.

Just suppose for one minute you are right. That they were setting up Burkett to get burned. They didn't handle it well.. holding the fire in their own hands so long that they got scorched themselves. And worse.. or what ever. If this was planned to fail, what was the point?

If they find some "new" documents that are the "Real McCoy" who is going to buy it. So looks to me they only way for this to hold water is that Mary Mapes is actually an agent of Karl Rove just like McAweful said.

What is the point of this whole affair? Especially, if one decides that someone expected it might go this way. Looks to me more like the wheels falling off of a speeding car..

Frankly this whole thing stinks. I just doesn't make sense in time. There are so many arrows pointing in different directions. But there is such overwhelming sense of coordination .. this was to be a perfect storm. Even the Kitty Kelly book reinforced the themes of "Fortunate Son." It has been a theme for Kerry Campaign "The Hero" vs. "The Child of Privilige." This theme has run its course months and months and this all ties together all of the way back to the Dem Convention.

You can't believe anything these people say... but just like your kids when they are lying to you.. you can tease out the truth by piece by piece. This is a poser.

Another thing that strikes me, is that just like when Kerry was dissapointed in VietNam when folks of honor turned their back on him as he tried to play the hero, he lashed out against them, accusing them of all sorts of crimes. Now, he is repeating history, morphing from war hero to anti-war hero (he hopes) expecting that America will again humiliate ourselves.

That's a very clever take on this and it's quite possible. It fits with the memos being just the pieces needed to fill in the blanks in her story with a nasty twist, but without being too splashy.
