Schwarzenegger Vetoes Calif. Driver's License Bill

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Wednesday vetoed a bill that would have allowed illegal immigrants to get a state driver's license.

The move was expected after Schwarzenegger cited security concerns in opposing the legislation, which had been proposed by Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez.

"One of the most important duties of the governor of a state is to protect its citizens," Schwarzenegger wrote in his veto message.

"Determining the true identity and history of an individual is a key component of that protection. This bill does not adequately address the security concerns that my Department of Homeland Security and I have and I cannot support it," he wrote.

In his drive last year to recall Gov. Gray Davis, Schwarzenegger campaigned hard against a similar law that approved driver's licenses for illegal immigrants, winning popular support for his stand.

After Schwarzenegger was sworn in as governor last January, state lawmakers repealed the license law.

Nunez, a Democrat from Los Angeles, was expected to issue a statement later on Wednesday, a spokesman said.

This bill is going to keep coming back in one form or another until Ahnold signs it or he's out of office. We haven't seen the last of it by any means.

He is dead wrong to do this.

He's going to screw a lot of people to please a few extremist eco-Nutcases.

I just mentioned to FarmFriend that by doing this Schwarzenegger will screw many High Sierra people, to please a very few eco-Nutcases.

Schwarzenegger is dead wrong on this one. I hate to see him do it.

If you folks do go for the separatist route, Schwarzenegger will be disgraced for having caused the break-up of California. What a bonehead. And for what?

You said:

"Not conservative enough???
Not conservative at all. " (About Arnie)

Then you said,

"What is it about the word "ILLEGAL" you don't understand.
The bill should have never been entertained... just more wasted State resources."

My point is that Arnie had no choice but to "entertain" it. It was planted in his lap by the representatives. And I said, let's give credit where it's due since ARNIE veto'd the bill.

k?

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced Wednesday that Henry Cisneros, a former housing secretary in the Clinton administration, will serve as national chairman of his charity that supports after-school programs.

Now post national guardsmen along the border to protect it and maybe the "must be born in the U. S." clause in running for President will be changed.

What can FR do to get this done. America needs Arnold in 2008!

My point is that Arnie had no choice but to "entertain" it.

And your point is wrong. He "entertained" Cedillo for at least 6 monts. Arnold said on multiple occasions "we will make this happen".... and continued to work with Cedillo on the ill-founded issue of "security" measures. "Security" is NOT the issue.

My point stands: What is it about ILLEGAL that you don't understand?

Arnold does not oppose drivers licenses for ILLEGALS... THAT is my issue and the reason that he will get no kudos from me on this veto. No amount of "security" measures make this palatable.

Personally, I think that any acceptance of ANY illegal drivers license legislation is political suicide for ANY politician out here. The John and Ken radio show has created a big STINK BOMB for anyone from dogcatcher on up to even CONSIDER signing/introducing an illegal DL bill. The figure was 70% against last I heard. I think Arnie is aware of that, too. His "entertaining" of Cedillo appears to be smoke and mirrors, something the democrats surely can recognize and appreciate. Why do I feel that way? Because the measure did NOT PASS his desk. This after Cedillo was quoted as affirming that Arnie "promised" him he would not veto the bill. I understand "illegal" perfectly. IQ 132. What part of "politics" are you having trouble with?

Henry Cisneros is one big jerk of a crook! Wasn't he the one who supported his girlfriend with our government tax money? Wasn't he in charge of the corrupt HUD that was responsible for giving govt housing, showing definite favoritism for HIS (illegal) people? ( I remember him proudly proclaming how this country was going to become Hispanicised.) How can Arnold hire him for any position in our government when he is so anti U.S. I thought we heard the worst of it when he hired Liar Dreier on his cabinet.

I like Arnold's veto regarding illegal drivers licenses, but he sure puts out some strange fast ones.

You're right about one thing: There's plenty of smoke and mirrors surrounding Arnold's politics. But I don't think the Democrats are the victims.

There seems to be a general mindset that enviro stuff is OK and worth while. Word just has not gotten out that this is pure socialism, bad for the environment and there is a better way. I don't know how we change that.

Veto of the Terrorist Driver's License bill, signed into law bill against sex with a corpse. Not bad!

LOL! Boy you Kalifornicators sure do have low expectations out of your government. That stuff sounds like it's out of a Mel Brooks movie.

Right on! Three cheers for Arnold Schwarzenegger, the second most famous politician ever to come out of Austria!

While we're on the subject, I translated the Govinator's family name from German the other day. Took me some time and research, but it seems to translate to "Harrow of the Saracens." Near as I can figure, the first dark (schwarz) skinned persons the germanic tribes ever saw were bloodthirsty muslim invaders in the middle ages. Apparently one of Arnie's ancestors was famous for his exploits in 'harrowing' (eggen) the invaders. So the family name became 'Schwarzen-egger'- harrow of the dark-skinned, or harrow of the Saracens. Curious that he has a family tie to the first muslim invasion of Europe.
