Governor (Schwarzenegger) appoints former Clinton official (Cisneros) to head charity

LOS ANGELES – Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced Wednesday that Henry Cisneros, a former housing secretary in the Clinton administration, will serve as national chairman of his charity that supports after-school programs.

"Providing after-school programs for all children by the year 2010 continues to be one of my most important priorities," the governor said in a statement. "I am very grateful that Henry Cisneros has agreed to serve as chairman."

Schwarzenegger has promoted after-school programs for years, and his After-School All-Stars pays for sports and educational programs for poor and minority children in 15 cities. Its major financial sponsors include Hummer and the Todd Wagner Foundation. Cisneros' position as chairman is unpaid.

Cisneros, chairman of American City Vista and Pacific City Homes, served as secretary of Housing and Urban Development from 1993 to 1997. After leaving the Clinton White House, he became president of the Spanish language television network Univision.

Cisneros also was among leading Democrats last year who honored Schwarzenegger's father-in-law, Sargent Shriver, at a dinner in Beverly Hills. More recently, he has been campaigning on behalf of fellow Democrat John Kerry.

Once considered a rising political star, Cisneros saw his fortunes slip after admitting during a background check for his cabinet position that he lied about payments he had made to a former mistress.

California 2004-2005 Budget:
Before- and After-School Programs—The Budget includes over $284 million in State and federal funds to provide before and after school enrichment programs for 275,000 children. Priority for expending over $60 million in new federal 21st Century Community Learning Center funds will be placed on increasing slots for 11-and 12-year olds and their eligible younger siblings in order to accommodate these children in before and after school programs, rather than in more expensive subsidized child care programs. To further this goal, the Superintendent of Public Instruction has been given the authority to waive grant caps to enable programs to create additional slots.

The Budget also allocates $5 million to expand high school programs. Also included in the total is $20 million in one-time federal funds to be used to expand grant caps to increase slots for 11- and 12-year olds, increase days of program operation, and increase grant caps for programs with waiting lists. Additionally, $5 million in one-time federal funds is available to programs in the first two cohorts for training, standards-aligned materials, and other allowable onetime costs.

In accordance with the provisions of Proposition 49, which was approved by the voters in November 2002, the After School Education and Safety Program became continuously appropriated in July 2004 at $121.5 million. This amount will increase as other provisions of Proposition 49 become effective in subsequent years.

Does anybody know how many other states are contributing to this program?

What a coverup! He lied about the mistress, and she wasn't "former."

Cisneros is currently co-chair of sKerry's campaign!

Henry Cisneros, a former "SAUSAGE BENDER" in the Clinton administration, will serve as national chairman of his charity that supports after-school programs.

Be afraid. Be VERY afraid!

Well, Henry will soon be able to keep all his floozies in a standard of living as least as good as high as Jesse Jackson keeps his. The one who suffers is Quyeezie Mmmmfffume who has some many illegitimate chaildren by so many different women that he has a hard time maintaing them.

Cisneros must feel good about getting near the public trough again.

My first post so go easy.
I am surprised at the responses. Did any of you read the article? It is a CHARITY!!! NOT a Govt. program. Arnold for many many years put his own money and solicited donations where his mouth is. Where Government has failed IE: Physical Education Arnold with private enterprising dollars has come through where it count's. How many of you critics can say the same?

The criticisms are mostly about Cisneros. And he deserves it.

Schwarzenegger is rapidly turning into a monumental disappointment to me. This morning on one of the local news programs here in the L.A. area on the veto of drivers license for illegal aliens, a clip showed Arnold walking with one of his close advisors, Willie Brown. Now he appoints Cisneros to some patronage job. In the meantime, he is doing absolutely nothing to help elect Republicans to the legislature, congress, and other down-ticket positions. He's doing zero to help rebuild the GOP in this state. Seems like Arnold is all about Arnold — and his wife's Dem friends.
