France rules out troops for Iraq
|
France has repeated its criticism of the US-led war in Iraq and ruled out sending troops to that country.
French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier told the UN General Assembly on Thursday, "As everyone knows, France did not approve of the conditions in which the conflict was unleashed. Neither today nor tomorrow will it commit itself militarily in Iraq."
He added: "In Iraq, violence is exploding. Only when the Iraqis themselves take control of their future ... will the country be able to escape the chaos which could destabilise the entire region."
The United States and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan have both called for troops to be sent to Iraq, in particular for a dedicated force to protect UN personnel helping to prepare for elections by the end of January 2005.
But France, one of the harshest critics of the war that brought down Saddam Hussein, has repeatedly ruled out any military participation in Iraq.
Annan's fears
None the less, France "reaffirms its willingness, with its European partners, to assist the Iraqi people in rebuilding their country and restoring their institutions", Barnier said.
UN chief Annan has got France's In an interview with BBC on Wednesday, Annan also expressed fears that holding credible elections in Iraq might not be possible as planned in January 2005, in view of the escalating violence. "I am one of those who believe that there should have been a second resolution from the UN Security Council to green-light the US-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein's regime," Annan said. "I have indicated that it was not in conformity with the UN charter from our point of view, and from the charter point of view it was illegal," he said. France expressed support for Annan's position, but the US and UK governments strongly objected to the UN chief's remarks.

France is a patethetic excuse for civilization.
Would someone tell these croissant suckers we weren't holding our breath?
French don't have will to fight. We should all know that by now. They had surrendered to Nazi's Hitler Germany without major fight while British RAF's vigorously fought and defeated Hitler's air force in the English channel. It cost thousands and thousands of American lives to retake France from the hands of Hitler because French didn't have will to fight. Therefore we shouldn't expect the French to fight in Iraq.
What does Skerry have to say???????
I just don't get it. Here's this leeeetle teeeny country with a leeettlle teeeny economy and lots of problems with religious freedoms and elderly health. They have come to us when they are in trouble because they really can't defend themselves against a large nation. Yet every time this leeetle country with a leetle economy and a leetle army disagrees in the slightest with the most powerful country in the world, everyone in the media jumps around like Napoleon has risen from the grave to make a statement. Who the heck CARES what France does/thinks/wants/says?
Role I'd like to see French troops play in Iraq: Human shields in Fallujah.
If Joan of Arc knew what she knows now, she wouldn't have lowered herself.
And here the French say that they'll have none of it...even if Kerry is President. Oh, the horrors!
(Actually, I think it's a real knee-slapper. Ain't nothin' funnier than watching Kerry's foreign leader support group tell him to take a hike.) Hehehehehe.
There's weeping and gnashing of teeth in Sadr's crowd and Zaqawi's. They'd been counting on the french arrival to replenish their ordnance.
Although his "laryngitis" (sudden fear of defeat as a result of finally understanding that his poll numbers go down in concert with the American public's exposure to him?)has 'prevented' his giving a speech over the past day or so, this of course didn't stop him from releasing a statement today criticizing not only President Bush, but Iraq's lawful (and U.N.-approved) leader as well for their reality-based depictions of current life in Iraq. Notably absent from his childish and cowardly screed today was any reference to France's business as usual attitude, that being a desire to distance itself from the heavy lifting and an eagerness to share in corrupt profits. My recommendation? Don't hold your breath waiting for Skerry to acknowledge France's slimy cowardliness. He will continue to bleat on about "building a true coalition" up through the day of his resounding defeat in November, ignoring any statement from his French pals that might be to the contrary.
Why send French troops there when they'd just surrender anyway?? ;)
They'll have to at least find some place in which they may launch "Operation Lucky Pierre."
"Those three naked men going at it at once - ze one in the middle is Lucky Pierre!"
This news kinda blows that scumbag Kerry out of the water.
"France rules out troops for Iraq"
What? Not even your 5 gear tanks with 4 reverse and 1 forward? And what about Kerry and plea?
France not sending troops, what a surprise. Of course they don't want to help because by going to Iraq we took away their cash cow. They screamed about lifting the sanctions to help the Iraqi people (while they sucked oil for food money) and now when they know they will not be getting anymore they couldn't give a rats behind about the Iraqi people. I think in France, Germany, Spain, and the Middle East they are all gloating and pray each night that things continue to spiral so they can again abuse and steal what rightly belongs to the Iraqi people. There is a special place reserved for the French and their attitudes. One day they will be sorry for what they have sowed.
"finally understanding that his poll numbers go down in concert with the American public's exposure to him"
THAT'S IT!!! I have been trying for months to put that thought into specific words....
Well said.
"One day they will be sorry for what they have sowed."
AND, on that day, regardless of their horror, I will celebrate!
That's right. He sure didn't sound like he had laryngitis. Another skerry flip flop.
