FORT WORTH, Texas - (KRT) - The source of a disputed CBS News report said Thursday he warned the network that documents critical of President Bush's service in the National Guard would be vigorously challenged, and should be independently validated.
"It caught CBS very flat-footed. They were not prepared. And I had warned them ... that this would probably be one of the most highly coordinated vicious attacks that they would ever have to face," Bill Burkett, a former Texas National Guardsman, said in an interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Burkett said that he and CBS News anchor Dan Rather spoke "forcefully" after questions arose about dated Guard memos supposedly from Bush's commander and provided to the network by Burkett.
Those memos, now suspected of being fake, were critical of Bush's service in the Texas Air National Guard in the early 1970s and said another commander wanted to "sugar coat" the future president's poor performance.
The memos were the basis of a "60 Minutes" report on Sept. 8. Almost immediately after the program aired, document experts said they appeared to be bogus.
While still maintaining that he believes the memos are authentic, Burkett said he insisted that CBS validate them independently before going on the air.[snip]

"..During a single phone conversation with Lockhart, Burkett said he suggested a "couple of concepts on what I thought (Kerry) had to do" to beat Bush. In return, he said, Lockhart tried to "convince me as to why I should give them the documents.".."

Smoking Gun Bump!
Big Joe
This is what Drudge is basing his on.
Maybe Burkett has it in writing from Lockhart.
(I just hope he remembers to scratch through the "Kinko's" logo and write "DNC-Washington,D.C." at the top)
Burkett is such a pathetic loser...
That is a fact, but he just threw a bucket of acid in Joe Lockhart's face.
"convince me as to why I should give them the documents."..
Who is "them" here? Is it the Kerry campaign, or CBS? Either way, it looks like 'coordination' between the campaign and CBS to me.
"that this would probably be one of the most highly coordinated vicious attacks that they would ever have to face,"
Don't f*&# with the Pajamahadeen.
Nobody wants to go down alone in this debacle. Burkett implicates Lockhart, Rather blames Mapes and Heyward.
WHAT FUN!
Forgive my ignorance but what are pseudosiezures? I have an idea but I don't want to show my ignorance before the whole world.
This is big stuff with Lockhart in the Kerry campaign and denying that he talked to Burkett about the documents. I know the Kerry campaign will follow the Clinton example of "sluts and nuts" defense tactics, but severe damage has been done with this.
I hate these have to register articles.
The main point of this one is the Burkett disclosure about Lockhart.
I have degrees in this stuff and never heard of a pseudosiezure. I assume it's fake but accurate.
