One of the "counterpoints" often put forward is that these numbers do not reflect per capita rates and are misleading because they do not take population into account. That said, an analysis reported in September 2003 (and discussed here on FR) showed that a black man age 18-30 from Washington DC was safer on a per capita murder rate fighting in Iraq than he was staying at home in DC. Unfortunately, the Left is going to believe what they want to believe.
