Report: Arab state helping Mossad track Hamas

By JOSEPH NASR

An Arab state provided Israel with valuable intelligence on the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas and its leadership overseas, the London-based Arabic daily al-Hayat reported Friday.

According to the newspaper, an intelligence agency belonging to an Arab state supplied Israel with intelligence on Hamas leaders living in Beirut, Damascus, Tehran and Khartoum at the request of Mossad head Meir Dagan.

Dagan approached the unnamed Arab state with a request for information on Hamas leaders, namely Khaled Mashal, head of the organization's political bureau, following the double suicide bombing in Beersheba last month in which 16 Israelis were killed.

Hamas claimed responsibility for the Beersheba attack. Israel has threatened to assassinate Hamas leaders residing in Damascus, which prompted Mashal and a number of senior Hamas leaders to flee the Syrian capital, reportedly to Tehran, the paper reported.

The "full document" presented to the Mossad included information about Mashal and his deputy, Moussa Abou Marzouk. The information included details of their movements, places of residence, habits, behavioral features, personality traits and the type of food they like, Al-Hayat reported.

Mashal survived an assassination attempt in 1997 when Mossad agents failed to kill him in Amman.

Israel assassinated Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and Abdel Aziz Rantisi, in the first half of 2004.

Widespread campaign against Hamas in Jordan
Jordanian security authorities arrest several Hamas activists, close four offices

Amman- Press sources said the Jordanian security authorities today raided and inspected several offices here belonging to Hamas political leaders in Jordan. They added that a member of Hamas Political Bureau and 12 other activists were arrested including Mohammad Abu Saif, the personal bodyguard of Khalid Misha’al, Chief of Hamas Political Bureau.

Abu Saif is known to be the one who on 25 September 1997 chased and arrested two Mossad agents after they attacked Mr. Misha’al, and sprayed a mysterious poison in his ear. Late King Hussein obliged the former Israeli prime minister Netanyahu to send the anti-poison medicine, which saved Mr. Misha’al’s life. The deal also included that release of Hamas Spiritual Leader Sheikh Ahmad Yasin and a number of Jordanian prisoners in Israeli jails against the release of the two Mossad agents.

The Jordanian sources said the security authorities raided the offices of Mr. Misha’al; Dr. Musa Abu Marzouk, former chief of the political bureau; Ibrahim Ghoushe, Spokesman; and Mohammad Nazzal, Hamas representative in Jordan. They also raided the regional office of Filisteen Al Muslima Magazine, confiscating the contents of the office. All offices were closed and sealed.

The sources pointed out that the crackdown on Hamas came few days after a visit to Amman made by Dany Yatom, former chief of the Mossad, who was responsible for the botched assassination attempt on Mr. Misha’al. Jordanian officials also received the CIA chief last week. They asserted that the Jordanian crackdown on Hamas was made after American-Israeli pressures to close Hamas offices in Jordan.

On the other hand, a Jordanian responsible sources revealed that the Chairman of the Palestinian Authority Yaser Arafat asked Jordan several times to close Hamas offices and to prevent its leaders from carrying out any political and information activities.

This could be signing the young King Abdullah's death warrant.

And there's the curious case of the "fifth minaret". In one of the articles I read on the subject, the funds for this project are being provided by the king. It ought to be an interesting dedication ceremony.
