I hope something closer to the GFDL track happens.

My cousin just left Mobile where he was helping his parents clean up to rush home and board up his place in Kings Bay, Georgia.

It is so sad how the poor people in Haiti are suffering from this hurricane. Where is the UN? What good are they?

I wish the people of Haiti would try to help themselves more than they do.

My brother recently moved to Vero Beach, they now have no roof and are leaving (again) to get out of the way of this one. Give me the 5 second earthquakes in California any day.

Oh, no--not again!

Florida FReepers, stay safe.

The thought of evacuating once more must be exhausting for these folks.

more like a Central Florida landfall come late Saturday night/early Sunday morning. Somewhere between Vero Beach/Brevard County or a bit further south in Pt.St.Lucie. Evacuations begin in Brevard County at 6 am.

Prayers to all during this storm

Oh great..... my parents live in NE Polk County in central Florida (40 miles south of Orlando). If this tracks as predicted in this article, the eyes of Frances, Charley AND Jeanne will have gone over their house.

Several days ago someone on FR predicted that Jeanne would switch course and hit Florida and got blasted for the prediction. Good call whoever you were. I wish you were eating crow, though. I have relatives there who have lost most everything they had worked for.

BREVARD COUNTY:Evacuations ordered; curfews set

From the Florida Today bulletin ...

Highlights from the briefing at noon at the Emergency Operations Center in Rockledge:

* County Commission Chairman Nancy Higgs said a state of emergency would be declared at 12:01 a.m. Saturday morning. She said mandatory evacuations from mobile and manufactured homes, low lying areas, the barrier islands and Merritt Island should begin at 6 a.m. Saturday. But she advised people in those areas to start leaving as soon as possible. Evacuations in other areas would be voluntary.

* Bob Sarver, Brevard County undersheriff, said a countywide curfew would be in effect starting at 8:30 p.m. Saturday and ending at 6 a.m. on Sunday. The curfew will go back into effect at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, ending at 6 a.m. on Monday. Future curfew decisions will be made after that.

* Emergency Management Director Bob Lay said the county should "start to feel" Jeanne about 9 p.m. on Saturday night, with winds coming in about 40 mph. He said forecasters expect the winds to pick up to 108, according to current forecasts which, of course, could change. He said heavy winds could be battering the county for as long as 29 hours. He said the storm surge could be as much as six to eight feet.

* Lay said people will have plenty of time to evacuate before the storm gets bad. He added he does not expect a massive evacuation from the south to complicate matters.

* Public Safety Director Jack Parker said he is concerned that many people in those areas subject to mandatory evacuations might not leave. He said they would be making a mistake to do that. If they get hurt, they might not be able to get help. Sarver added that a police presence would be sharply reduced, or eliminated altogether, once the storm gets bad.

* Higgs said school officials would make a decision later today on what to do about school closings. Schools are open today, as are county offices. As of now, high school football games are scheduled to go ahead.

* Higgs said all shelters would be open starting tomorrow.

NOTE: This was as of the noon Friday briefing ... any speed up of the storm could accelerate these times.

Well, I'm on the west coast of Fl in Citrus Co about 70 miles north of St. Pete's. If the winds are 150 miles wide we will probably get some plus some rain. I still have tarps enclosing the open lanai & the plastic on the front windows from Frances. Maybe Jeanne can knock the rest of the dead branches caused by Frances out of the trees. I got our hurricane supplies today- gas for the van, beer & wine plus large Hershey candy bars. All set & ready to go!

Best wishes for an easy time to everyone in Florida. Looks like my part of Houston can't even buy a drop of rain. Ivan missed me so far. I am still hoping for a shower tonight or tomorrow.

MFH, you should change your handle to My Favorite Hurricane!

Hoosiermama, thanks for always thinking of me when these storms look like they're charging right up Florida. It appears that this one will miss me (sigh of relief) and once again my area is lucky.

The local news reporterette just warns of rain and maybe some high winds on Sunday.

I'm so tired of taking the patio furniture in, taking it out, taking it in, taking it........

I feel like I'm working for Mayflower Vans.
