Report: California a Leading Port for Forced Labor
Sacramento Bee ^ | September 24, 2004 | David Whitney

WASHINGTON (SMW) - More than 10,000 foreign-born people are working under slave-like conditions in the United States, and California is a major port of entry for them, a new report said Thursday.

The study by the Human Rights Center at the University of California, Berkeley and the non-profit Free the Slaves said that about half those brought into the country for forced labor end up in the sex business, many as prostitutes.

The second largest category of forced labor is domestic service, where about 27 percent of the forced labor ends up.

. . . [excerpted]

One of the cases involved Berkeley-area businessman Lakireddy Bali Reddy, who brought young girls over from his native India, using them as sex slaves and forcing them to work in his restaurant. Charges were brought against him in 2000, and Reddy eventually pleaded guilty to several immigration and sex crimes.

. . . [excerpted]

"The largest number of persons discovered to be in forced labor in the United States were Chinese, followed by Mexican and Vietnamese," the report said.

At a press conference releasing the report, a former victim of child forced labor said he was brought into the country from Zambia when he was 13 to be a singer with a traveling church choir in Texas.

Given Kachpa, who was orphaned at 9, said he was promised that money would be sent back to his siblings. What he found, he said, was that the choir was made to sing as many as seven times a day, to perform even when exhausted or sick, and that they were denied food if they failed to sing.

"No sing, no food," he said.

"Forced labor is here, festering and it's growing because there's a demand for it," Stover said.

Interesting twist.

People used to be Shainghai'd and taken OUT of San Fran. for forced labor.

Now they're being brought in!

The penalty for trafficking in or using slave labor in the US should be death.

A couple of days ago there was a news story out of Atlanta which stated that 'forced labor' was going on at a plant which supplied the polished-granite countertops for Home Depot.

Apparently this group of laborers came from Africa on L1 visas--short-term work permits.

HomeDepot's got a small problem as a result--and of ALL PLACES, Atlanta!!

General Sherman, anyone?

Most of them are illegals and should be deported. Those smuggling them in, if US Citizens, should have the book thrown at them, and if not, they should be deported as well.
