Israel Says It Kills Hamas Leader in Syria

JERUSALEM - Israel claimed responsibility Sunday for a car bombing in Syria that killed a top Hamas leader.

Israeli security sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the car bombing killed Izz Eldine Subhi Sheik Khalil. The death was also reported on a Hamas Web site.

Top Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites) and the army chief, have warned recently that no Hamas leader — even those outside the Palestinian territories — was safe.

Israel's Channel 2 television said the attack was a new tactic in fighting Palestinian militant groups. The station said the tactic came in the wake of growing U.S. pressure on Syria.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad both maintain headquarters in Damascus. Sharon last week reiterated a demand that Syria crack down on these groups.

I wonder what indiscriminate car bombings would do in a place like Damascus, Terhran. How would their people react?

Israel sent a clear message today. Syria better start thinking about the WMD and scientists they have hidden.

In a laconic statement, Syrian spokesmen told the daily Al-Hayat, "the Palestinian leaders are outside Syrian territory."

LOL

It is remarkably gratifying when a government keeps its word.

Good work on greasing that terrorist mongrel! Keep up the great work!

The last Hamas leader they gave justice to looked like this. Gotta be a tough position to keep filled. I hope Hamas has a good personnel director.

Don't do this, Israel!

It brings far too much rationality to the situation.

I can't handle that.

Imagine, terrorists fearing for their lives anywhere in the world. Turning a car key, answering a cellphone, flushing a John. It makes one shudder.

Instead, we need more political correctness, double-standard, media handwringing, and incentives for more terrorism, or else this day will feel different than all the others.

"Terrorize the terorists."

Exactly. The people will demand action. They will want to be protcted. This would probably lead to arrests which will create a cycle of violence, especially if the uprising is backed by someone.

This would more than likely work in Terhran because of rising student unrest. But the Kurds in Syria can just as easily actup. Would like to see them come from across the border.
