All eyes are on Rather's future

NEW YORK -- The morning after Dan Rather admitted the biggest mistake of his career, he agreed to go on Larry King's primetime show and talk about the worst crisis ever to strike a network news anchor.

Rather, after all, is used to doing exactly as he pleases, enjoying a status that only a dozen or so have in the history of television news.

But in a sign that his movements are now constricted, Rather's people abruptly pulled out of the King interview. CNN says his appearance was confirmed and it had already begun airing promos. Insiders at CBS say they never made any promises and that, ultimately, the front office didn't want Rather on King's show.

Rather may be a tenacious fighter, but it's not clear if he'll be able to survive the scandal over a botched "60 Minutes II" story impugning President Bush (news - web sites)'s National Guard service record.

If he were done in, it would mark the first time an anchor has resigned under such gloomy circumstances.

Industryites roundly agree that even more damaging than the Sept. 8 segment itself was Rather's repeated defense of the story, which put forth new documents and information positing that Bush used his family clout to avoid his Guard duties.

"I know that this story is true," Rather said two days after the segment aired. "I believe that the witnesses and the documents are authentic." [snip]

Rather being pulled off the Larry King Show is another indication of how dire his situation is. Larry King is not exactly known as a hard interviewer.

I think Rather pulled himself off the show so he wouldn't have to answer any of King's questions. It will prove to be very em-bear-ass-ing for him, sooner rather than later.

does Dan Rather also own a ranch in Texas ?
I bet he does.
Hey, Dan, isn't it time to go 'back to your ranch' ?

I suspect the problem was that Rather was likely to undo his retraction by saying that the documents, while forged, were still accurate.

Nawww, don't fire him yet, it will be too much fun to watch him squirm and look at the camera and announce George Bush's re-election. Then they can drag him off camera screaming, for all I care.

The article says Rather's people pulled him off the interview. Probably, they are afraid Rather would get himself in even worse trouble if he continues with the, "documents are suspect but the story is true" angle.

Rather is just arrogant enough to try that. Drudge has a headline that Rather will be retired in the spring. If so, with everybody watching this so closely, it amounts to a firing however they sugarcoat it.

No one will doubt why he is gone. Rather may get angry and leave immediately.

Eventually Rather is going to "break" the story that the TANG memos were indeed fake.

He'll win another Peabody Award for excellence in journalism and retire very wealthy. The MSM always protect their own.

Nooooooooo!!! Please don't fire Dan!!!

Dan Ra(^th)er is a festering boil on the butt of CBS News, and I want him out front every night as a constant reminder of the bias, arrogance, and duplicity of the MSM.

I hope it was one of Rather's corporate bosses that cancelled the interview. They may be growing tired of Dan being the news, rather than reporting it. Maybe CBS isn't totally clueless.

"He's just immensely popular when he goes out to visit the markets. I'd be surprised to find that the guy doesn't vote Republican," says Lee, who is general manager of the Eye affil in Roanoke, Va.

Riiight, just like Michael Moron and Jane Fonda.
