My guess is that Burkett or some other ex-military type supplied a "sample" memo and the Bush memo was fabricated elsewhere

But once again, if someone was supplied with a real memo then they would have had the date style correct and the abbreviations for the ranks correct.

The only way that the theory would work, is if someone "read" a memo to a typist that doesn't have knowledge of the military. Then the typist produced it from their concept was what everything is suppose to look like.

Yes, agreed. The fact remains that the documents themselves are blatant fabrications. The dirtier this paper, the better!

Does anyone besides me find this extremely unattractive?

What about the Army terminology? The rumor that such memos existed started with someone who could have had access to National Guard files, otherwise thery would have no credibility.

But if that person was not willing to come forward publicly or would not produce copies of the memos, then someone else had to be talked into producing them.

My guess is that Glenn Smith told Mapes about some old memos he saw while digging up dirt for Ann Richards. Mapes convinced Burkett that the memos did exist but were destroyed in 1997 by Bush advisors.

Burkett took it upon himself to reconstitue the memos. He got cold feet at the end and tried to prevent their publication by asking Dan Rather to authenticate them.

But the Kerry campain was desparate to counter the SwiftVets because Kerry was in freefall and couldn't think of anything to say, so Kerry himself told Dan to go ahead with the story because he "knew" the memos were authentic.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

The problem with Bill Burkett being the forger is that the format of the memo would have been correct. He also would have written the date in the proper military style and used the correct abbreviations for rank. I could go on ...

Not necessarily so. It was a long time ago and BB was more Army than ANG. It fits, somewhat.

Is Mapes the producer who broke the abu girab prisoner abuse story?
There's something fishy about that whole set-up.

Piers Morgan, editor of The Daily Mirror(UK) was fired in May after his paper admitted that photos of British soldiers abusing an Iraqi were fakes. The tabloid issued a statement that they were victims of a "calculated and malicious hoax."
Morgan refused to admit the pictures were fake and apologize, so he was sacked and immediately escorted from the building.

I wonder if Piers and Mary are pals.

For some reason, I just don't see Mapes inaccurately sprinkling the fabrication of an Air Force document with Army terminology. Rumors aren't worth the paper they're...never mind.

They are "forged documents" because they were attributed to somebody who did not compose them, and which contain forged signatures. They are forgeries.

Burkett has acknowledged himself as providing the memos, but has failed to provide any verifiable third party source. Accordingly, he must be considered the source. However, unless there is litigation or prosecution, with witnesses forced to testify under oath, it is unlikely that the facts will ever come out. Instead, a permanent cloud of justified suspicion will rest over the heads of all associated in any way with this fraud, including all the parties at CBS News.
My guess as to what happened is this: this was to be the democrat October surprise, but was moved up by the campaign in a hurry when Kerry's polls cratered after the Republican convention. Burkett was to hold the memos to prevent any leak (and to prevent any verification). When the campaign, and its media arm decided to move up the project, bought air time for its related ads, Burkett wanted to be sure that it wasn't just CBS, but the campaign that wanted to go ahead. Accordingly, he demanded that Lockhart call to confirm.

To call them forgeries would suggest that real documents of this nature exist, which they DO NOT!

Anything made up to look as if it were real is a forgery.

The dictionary defines forgery as : the act or legal offense of imitating or counterfeiting documents, signatures, etc to deceive

I think the same person that forged Kerry's after action reports did it. Kerry got in touch with Cbs and told them to get some military document and send them up,I can do it I can do anything better than anyone. I'm a better forger than you

From the onset, I suspected Mary Mapes because she had already similarly exploited her job in 1987 as producer of KIRO TV news during a police shooting inquest here in Seattle. She "produced" and interviewed a fake witness at the eleventh hour to claim that police shot the suspect without any warning. It was unfortunate that two newspaper reporters where on the scene when this fake and drunk witness appeared through some bushes and asked, "What’s all the commotion?" No kidding!

I suspect Burkett is also guilty of something if not directly behind the forgeries. He seems like such a loon and he obviously hates Bush with a passion. Perhaps they collaborated on the forgeries. I'd like to see one or both of them serve jail time if they are guilty.
