Kerry says he would seek nations' input on Iraq

SPRING GREEN, Wis. -- Senator John F. Kerry set some new markers for his diplomatic skills yesterday, saying that as president he would immediately convene a summit of all European and Arab heads of state "to figure out how together we're going to assume the burdens" of Iraq and proposing that another country could provide a base for training Iraqi security forces.

Kerry, taking questions from an invitation-only audience of Wisconsin voters, said "cutting and running" in Iraq would never be an option if he is commander in chief.

He said his proposed summit also would include searching for common ground to solve the Israeli-Palestinian crisis, prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, and cut off Arab support for terrorist groups.

Giuliani also mocked Kerry for having mixed up the names of Red Sox players David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez earlier this summer. "Some of these things give you a pretty good idea of who's real and who isn't," Giuliani said. "I know President Bush, and he may not be a champion debater, like John Kerry, but he sure is real."

Anybody fortunate enough to have survived the Carter years will remember the endless handwringing followed by sudden pointless lurches of activity that represented his idea of leadership.

Kerry, like Carter, has this need to be admired for his goodness which translates into pathetic helplessness in action.

Wanna hear a good Jimmy Carter story ? Funny nobody mentions this.

In 1979 the Pirates beat the Orioles to win the World Series. The post game wrap up was in the locker room. Jimmy Carter went to the locker room to congratulate the Pirates on winning, standing presidential in the center of the room. After he spoke the NBC sportscaster then interviewed at some length the Pirate coach with Jimmy standing ignored in the middle of the locker room. Then the sportscaster crossed over to the other side of the room, camera still running, no commercial break, directly in front of and completely ignoring the Commander in Chief of the Free World (who stood silently presidential) to the Oriole coach, speaking to him at some length. Then he crossed over again, camera still running, again directly in front of and completely ignoring the POTUS (still standing silently presidential in the middle of the locker room) to speak some more with the Pirate players and coach back on their side of the locker room. Finally, a commercial intervened to mercifully let Jimmy get out of there.

Can you imagine any Republican president (even Gerald Ford) being that easily humiliated and on prime time pre-cable 60% share network television ? The entire viewing audience saw that Jimmy Carter had the command presence of a potted plant, no capacity to take charge of a situation whatsoever. The POTUS is the most important person in any room he is in. Carter had no conception of how to act important, to demand deference.

Kerry will get the nations opinion/advice on Nov. 2. I suspect they will tell him to take the next 3 months to go wind surfing off Nantucket.
