He didn't back off even a little teensy weensy bit.
Said he'd do it again, he went there to congratulate the military for their fine work overthrowing Saddam.
Here's my idea of what Dubya could say on November 2:
"our friends on the other side of the aisle have been talking about a certain banner flown last year on the USS Lincoln. The sign was the idea, with my hearty approval, of General Tommy Franks, signalling the end of major combat operations. (As I said that day.)
"There were those nations who pledged their support to our coalition, to take effect once the mission had been complete. Once that speech was made, many nations, in addition to those who willingly and without coercion, joined us in the fight against Al Qaeda and the remnants of Saddam's regime.
"So, at that time, the banner was absolutely appropriate, to thank our troops, not to heap scorn upon them. When asked if I would fly that banner again, I said "absolutely".
"Tonight, I keep that promise. Thanks to everyone who worked on the campaign, but more importantly, thanks to those who love freedom so much, they know it is worth fighting for, and dying for, and living for.
"Certainly, there is more to do. For now, to the campaign staff and to all of you, I dedicate this banner:
"MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!"
Just my $0.0123 (if those mentioned in my tagline come to power)
If Dubya REALLY wants to set them off, he should deliver his victory speech on Election Night under a banner that says "Mission Accomplished".

Do it, Mr. President!
Fly the banner and show footage of the flight suit.
Yeah, I admit to selfish interests in wanting to see my Prez in the flight suit again.
It would still be a perfect move. Dems said not to mention 9-11. They thought they had intimidated them to water down mention at least. Took them all off guard at the convention when the Republicans made 9-11 the central point.
They have been saying from the start not to use this footage. I say now's the time to use it!
Make it the October Surprise!
