Good Luck!
Congratulations for taking on this new mission ~ You Are The Man!
I'm a proud Navy dad. My son enlisted the 1st semester of his senior year, shipped out upon graduating. What impressed me most about my son's recruiter was his truthfulness and candor, and how he checked in a couple of times a month to make sure things were going ok.
Thank you, Old Sarge. And may those you meet be as graced and blessed as I have been by your input and presence here at FR.
I tried to find another one, but no luck.
Funny you mention that...
I keep a copy of that very pamphlet in my laptop's disk sleeve.
I'll see about getting more. It IS what I'll be inviting these folks to help me defend, after all...
Hey, mama bear, remember what i was just asking you the other day?
Old Sarge,
I think you might be worrying about something that is actually very minor. I served a hitch in the Big Green Machine back in the mid 70s and my daughter, who is now 27, wanted to join the Marines. She wanted to be a hospital corpsman, so I convinced her to join the Navy instead. At the Navy Recruiter's office, there were two noncoms -- a young guy in his late 20s and a seasoned senior chief who had already put in 20 years, but was still going strong. My impression after meeting with these two guys and watching the young people coming into the office was that motivation was not an issue. Of course, this was ten years ago, but still -- I'll bet that hasn't changed much. Young people who are visiting the recruiter are thinking about a lot more than the college fund and GI Bill benefits they may receive after their enlistment. These young folks, God bless 'em, are highly motivated and, especially in this time of war, know what possibilities they are likely to face. I just don't see a significant number of them coming into a recruiter's office hoping to negotiate a "safe and secure" billet so they can take their bennies and run . . . of course, I may be mistaken, but I don't think so.
Even ten years ago, I was impressed at the high standards the military has set for recruitment. Wasn't that way back when I joined. From all indications I've seen, these high standards are still in place. Not only is a high school diploma required (no GEDs, thank you very much), but the prospective trainees must be in good physical condition BEFORE boot.
Besides, I'm sure you'll get plenty of training before they turn you loose, and much of your questions will be answered during that phase of your new undertaking.
BTW, my daughter became a hospital corpsman and spent a five year hitch in the Navy. This past June, she graduated from Midwestern as a Physician's Assistant. Her hospital corpsman training was invaluable for her attaining her long-held goal (she's wanted to be a PA since she was 15). I'm proud of her. Hehe. Wish I was making as much as her starting salary, too :)
OK, now I have a question. I recognize your handle from ten years ago and more. Were you an active participant in the old FIDO or Paul Revere networks? Maybe RIME? I ran a BBS back during the '90s and was a hub for both FIDO and the Paul Revere Network, and was a RIME node for a while. My bbs was the 2nd Amendment BBS, Whittier, CA.
you've got mail.
Hey -- you know if Freepers can't help you "with the data, debunked or confirmed," than no one can. You'll be loaded for bear.
It's done Sarge.
I called a local family owned pizza parlor and ordered 4 for the guys at the recruiting office. I talked to the owner and he decided to match my order with pizzas for the guys in the offices at the armory in Jackson.
The pizza shop owner also says he will put out a donation jar on his counter and says he will bring the subject up at the chamber of commerce meeting.
Look who's going to help fight the terrorists and keep our country safe!!!!!
Old Sarge, you will most certainly be in our thoughts and prayers as you take a place between us and our enemies!
God speed, Old Sarge.
Hey! This is pretty cool! You are a stand up guy, Old Sarge, and my hat is off to ya!
Thanks, Little Bro.
I am resolved to not be a used car salesman, like the ancient stereotype that The Left uses.
Your nephew has his own set of BDU's now, did you know that?
You honor us all in your endeavor!
Man, you folks need to choose a better moniker/name. Looks like something comin out of West Hollywood. LOL...
GOGETTUM!
God Bless You Old Sarge, You're the Best!
Ah, but I'm afraid not. "Old Sarge" is a 21st-Century creation - started both here at FR, and over at Lucianne.com. But I used to BBS out of Orlando, FL, during that time frame. You "might" have seen my unique writing style on FIDONet, possibly.
And, you're right: high school diplomas are a must, but I have to give you "Wait-Out" for the GED. Felony or probation is DOA, along with a few other things. And I'll be staring USAREC at Pine Bluff sometime in the next month or so, which means Absentee Ballot for Sarge.
