Yesterday I interviewed several CBS News employees about their controversial story highlighting the possibility of a Draft reinstatement. I spoke with Richard Schlesinger, the story's reporter, Sandra Genelius, a CBS Spokeswoman, and Linda Karas, the producer of the piece.
First I spoke with Mr. Schlesinger, who was eager to talk to me about the motivation and issue that drove the story. He expressed a firm belief that they "played it straight."
INDC: "First of all, what motivated CBS News to run this story?"
Schlesinger: "The point of the piece was taking look at issues through the eyes of people who feel that those issues are the most important ... in the campaign. People who are vitally concerned. We've done many of these stories on many topics. I did another one around affordable housing ... and minimum wage, for example."
INDC: "A lot of people have a problem with this issue though, because it's specifically something that's been used by the Kerry campaign as a recent talking point. Did this influence ..."
Schlesinger: "No, it was an issue because it was out there. There are issues that we choose to do stories on ... I specifically said in the story, 'both candidates have said they would not support a reinstatement of the draft.'"
INDC: "Probably the main concern with the story is that the e-mails that are shown in the piece are false; they've been debunked on various internet sites long ago ..."
Schlesinger: "The fact is, they were going around. I know several people that got them, and its gotten people all riled up. Whether or not theres any reality to there being a draft, is almost besides the point. Do I think theres going to be draft? No. But it's an issue that people are talking about."

Oh, brother. If that's their criterira, why don't they do a long piece on whether or not Kerry gets botox shots? It might not be true, but after all, everyone's talking about it.
You mean... like the SWIFT BOAT VETERANS STORY?
Speechless...
If we can frighten one voter enough to make them vote for Kerry the piece is worth doing.
Why not just tell it like it is.?
They only have so many hours of broadcast time, and have to choose stories carefully. Plus all of the SWBfT allegations have been thoroughly debunked, everybody knows that.
</sarcasm>
Reality schmeality. A helluva motto for a news organization: Truth - it's besides the point.
That clears that up. "It was out there, so we did a piece on it." Looks like it is safe to bring up Juanita Brodderick and Vince Foster again.
Typical cBS..Fake But Accurate.
so by C=BS "standards" I can make up a story post it on FR, and then notify the Network the story is OU THERE and they will cover it.
ARE THESE PEOPLE FRIGGING NUTS?
This really needs no comment, because Schlesinger just hung himself with that remark. Reality doesn't matter to these people, it's all about what they want to talk about. And they want to talk about anything that will harm our sitting President in wartime, true or not.
I'm speechless. I shouldn't be this surprised, but I am.

Did C BS report, that the bills to reinstate the draft. Are sponsored by Democrats? HR-163 is sponsored by Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) and S-89 is sponsored by Fritz Hollings (D-S.C.)
I"m betting NOT!
That sounds like the dems alright!!!
Reminds me of a story I read in the Chicago Tribune about a crime bill that was under consideration here in Illinois. It said in the article that "Some say the bill is worthless without a ban on assault weapons". Which was of course the author's way of throwing in an editorial comment by anonymously attributing that sentiment to "Some", whoever "they" are. Wasn't long after that article that I stopped reading that Commie rag.

Now where did I put that e-mail about the guy in Malaysia that needs a bank account number to hide his millions. Maybe Schlesinger would do a story on that poor schmuck. After all, that's BS but makes the rounds regularly...so it should qualify under his standards. Maybe I'll send Schlesinger the website www.urbanlegends.com...he would have a year's worth of stories from that!
I didn't see it mentioned anywhere in the article that the Bills listed in the bogus e-mail are Democrat sponsored bills. You don't think they left that out on purpose, do ya? Naaaahhhh......not CBS.
I imagine the writer would view this sentence as a compliment.

This interview tends to establish that the rot at CBS does not stop at the top with Rather. It extends down to the root. The peons, as well as the principals, are corrupt.
