Ottawa Hailed as heroes for their crack shots in the mountains of Afghanistan, a group of decorated Canadian snipers were considered traitors by their fellow soldiers for the simple reason they worked alongside American troops.
That's the troubling allegation behind a new probe under way by the Canadian military.
André Marin, the Canadian Forces ombudsman, has been given the task of finding out why the snipers were treated so poorly by their colleagues.
In an unprecedented request, Gen. Ray Henault, chief of defence staff, has asked Marin to probe the treatment that is blamed with forcing a few of the snipers from the military.
"It's the first referral we've received by the chief of defence staff," Marin said yesterday.
"The chief of defence staff is concerned about the nature of the complaints that he's heard and he wants an independent investigation to get to the bottom of it," Marin told the Star.
"These are very serious allegations," Marin said.
For the countless American soldiers whose lives were saved by sharp eyes and crack shots of the snipers, the Canadians were seen as heroes.
But other Canadian soldiers resented their close affiliation with the American troops and made no secret of it when the snipers returned to their base in Afghanistan and then home to Canada, a source told the Star.

The US should thank them by inviting them to join a real military. I am sure they will be 100% welcomed.
Komrades to the north ping!
Seven weeks? What are they joining a country club? Do current members vote on new members?
By the few snipers that quit, the Canadian military has been cut in half.
Ahhh, the joys of joint operations with our allies...
Anti-Americanism is as central to the Canadian Party Line as anti-Semitism was to Nazism, or hatred of the bourgeoisie to the Communists.
The Liberal Party is evil - and their accomplices on the left are worse.
Nothing bothers the Canadian liberal press more than the fact that the best snipers in the world are from Canada. I bet they're going to start complaining that by participating in Afghanistan we allowed for additional US forces to go to Iraq, as though Iraq and Afghanistan are too completely different wars.
Same reason why we turned down the US request to use our CF-18 fighters in Afghanistan.
I REALLY wish this once great country wasn't run by the French.
Welcome to FRee Republic, it's been salvation for many of us, you're now on that list LOL.
I would vote to grant them citizenship and camaraderie in a real country, too, eager and able to defend itself and its lesser neighbors.
But for the 3000 mile completely unguarded border we share with Kanuckistan, their envy and hatred of us would be of little account. The problem is that their hatred of us has driven them mad and they will do everything they can to harm us, including harboring, hiding and supporting Islamofascist terrorists. Vide their recent cave-in allowing sand goblins in their midst to apply "islamic law" on Kanuckistan soil. That sort of blind hatred, coupled with the unlimited access over our unguarded border, can have consequences. What a smarmy pack of cowards they be.
My sentiments exactly!
Send them all a pre-approved citizenship applications and transfer forms into similar positions in the US military: equivalent rank, associated pay grade, better income tax rates and health care!
Well said. But to what degree has this "infection" affected Canadians as a whole? 1/3? 1/2? or more...?
"We're talking about enrolling somebody into the military of the country, not somebody to flip hamburgers,"
Only a burger fliper would want to join the most
poorly equipped military on the face of the earth
Give them a road map to North Carolina. They can apply at Fort Bragg. "Come on down, eh?"
Canada has a problem...it is called Quebec
Really? You must be referring to those Canadians [if any] who have enlisted in the US Marine Corps and successfully completed Marine sniper school. If such be the case, more power to them. Otherwise, your statement is not well supported.
Hey, thanks. I've actually been reading this thing for several months now, just never got around to registering.
