West Virginians Ready To Welcome Martha Stewart At "Camp Cupcake"

POSTED: 11:35 am EDT September 30, 2004 UPDATED: 12:02 pm EDT September 30, 2004

ALDERSON, W.Va. -- Some people of Alderson, W. Va., say that after she's finished with her first visit, they'd like to see homemaking diva Martha Stewart come back again -- voluntarily.

Alderson -- nicknamed "Camp Cupcake" -- is the home of the Federal Correctional Institute where Stewart will serve her time for lying to federal investigators.

Betty Alderson, who once worked as a secretary at the nation's oldest prison for women, said it's really a beautiful campus.

There are no gates or fences -- and most days, anyone can drive straight to the warden's home.

A federal prisons spokesman said inmates at Alderson typically rise about 6 a.m. and work most of the day, making 12 to 40 cents an hour at jobs such as ground maintenance, sanitation and food service.

They sleep in bunk beds in nine large rooms that house between 26 and 90 inmates each.

Alderson prison opened in 1927 and has seen the likes of Billie Holliday, Tokyo Rose, and would-be presidential assassins Squeaky Fromme and Sara Jane Moore.

Stewart, 63, repeated in a statement Wednesday that she had hoped to be at a facility closer to her family and more accessible to her lawyers.

But she said she was happy to get a quick assignment.

Stewart is appealing her conviction, but said she would report to prison anyway to get the episode behind her.

The celebrity homemaker had asked to serve her five-month sentence at the federal prison in Danbury, Conn.

That prison is close to Stewart's home in Westport, Conn., and would have made it easier for her 90-year-old mother to visit.

Her second choice was the federal prison in Coleman, Fla.

A federal judge has ordered Stewart to report to prison by Oct. 8.

After the five months in prison, Stewart will serve five months under house arrest at her estate in Bedford, N.Y.

Stewart and stockbroker Peter Bacanovic were convicted of lying about why she sold ImClone Systems stock in 2001. Both are appealing their convictions.

"You know those cockroaches that you used to hate? Have you ever tried using them to decorate a raisin cake?"

Looks like Martha is getting in a last few moments of luxury before she heads to West By Gosh Virginia:

Facing the cold reality of five months in the hollers of West Virginia, Martha Stewart did the only thing any responsible diva would do - head for the Bahamas. Stewart took off in her private jet Thursday for one final weekend of luxury, spending some quality time at an ultrachic resort in the Bahamas, three sources said.

Stewart, 63, is set to surrender to the federal prison camp in Alderson, W. Va., by 2 p.m. Friday. She'll serve five months there, taking her deep into the heart of an Appalachian winter.

But first: the Bahamas, for the wedding of her longtime friend and public relations rep, Susan Magrino. Although it's conceivable she may clock some hard time on the white sand beaches and sip a margarita or two by the pool.

Magrino is scheduled to wed sometime this weekend at a high-end resort on Paradise Island.

A Stewart spokeswoman declined to comment on the diva's weekend plans.

Stewart, who was convicted in March of conspiracy, obstruction of justice and lying to government agents, had to get permission from the government to travel outside of the United States.

Magrino has represented Stewart for years and had a hand in advising her when the investigation of Stewart's now-infamous ImClone Systems stock trade first became public in 2002.

Stewart was staying at an over-the-top beachside resort fronting the ocean that caters to the rich and fabulous and specializes in privacy.

There she can experience a world far from the backwoods of West Virginia. She can linger in the spa, watch the sunset and inhale the fragrance of hibiscus and bougainvillea native to the area.
