I wish the President had asked Kerry to clarify his statement on giving nuclear fuel to Iran.

The President did just what he was supposed to do in this forum. This is not the debate club at the local high school or at Yale. This is a free opportunity to have 45 minutes to drive home YOUR message to YOUR supporters. You talk to YOUR supporters and YOU deliver the messages that YOU have determined YOU want to deliver. Those messages were:

1. Kerry is inconsistent.

2. Inconsistency is not a leadership quality.

3. We are at war.

4. We will determine our destiny, not some other body like the UN.

Kerry fell right into the trap by using the word "global". He also referred to Vietnam four times. Most voters could care about Vietnam. And what the hell is a "summit" going to do to stop the jiahdis from killing kids and lopping off heads.

The President also avoided bashing and let Kerry come across as the attack dog. Note that he went right back to speaking to his base out in the heartland.

45 minutes of talking to YOUR base. You'll see it again and again in these debates. It will fly right over the commentator's heads as to what just happened.

Rudy Giulliani doesn't think the president did badly, most of the panel on FOX didn't think he did either

wrong the panel gives it to Kerry.

While I don't think anyone won tonight, I hate to say that Kerry came out on top. It appeared to me that Bush let Kerry get to him. Bush's best game is not a one-on-one debate. Kerry has 20 years experience on the Senate floor (perhaps one of the best debate training fields available). Bush only entered politics (as a candidate) within the last decade.

Perhaps I'm being too critical of Bush's performance. As a Bush supporter, I hope that is the case. And I agree with others here that a town hall setting will be much more favorable to the President (depending on how many DNC operatives are allowed to infiltrate the audience).

And by the way, NBC just had 6 so-called "undecided voters" on. They all said they thought Kerry won tonight, and all implied they will be voting for him. I don't for one second believe they were truly "undecided" before tonight. I think Terry McAuliffe just hit a homerun by getting them in that panel. And that's the kind of stuff I'm worried about.

What a lot of you Freepers have to realize is that for many on the Right, they want Bush to run a negative, harsh smash mouth campaign. Since Kerry is doing that and Bush isn't they think "Kerry is winning"

Failing to call KErry on his lies has nothing to do with wanting Bush to run a negative debate or campaign. What planet are you on?? Since when is standing up for the truth being negative?

I also disagree with the fact that anyone who wishes Bush had done better is somehow betraying the country...

Hey like I said..and anyone that's ever been on a witness stand will agree...it is tough to out talk a TRAINED LIAR=LAWYER, no matter how smart you are.

Bush had opportunities to expose the truth and missed them, and that is not advocating a "negative" position.

The fact remains, any idiot who doesn't yet know who they are voting for is a pathetic excuse for a human being.

Not only were there a lot of 'strangers' here but they managed to post their drivel two and three times, taking up time and space.

My 11 year old caught the jerk lying more than once tonight, too. If these kids can catch it, without our coaching them...well, the adults who fall for his lies don't deserve to vote.

I think Bush won, hands down. Kerry was too slick, did the typical flip flops and didn't say anything of substance.

I NEVER thought I'd dislike someone as much as I did Clinton and Gore. Until tonight.

I guess that you didn't read that the DNC had sent out emails giving out all the email addresses of the media and online polls, instructing their people to respond within minutes of the debate so that Kerry could claim victory.

There is only one more debate for the President. The VP debate is the third debate. So Bush has one more round.

There are two more debates between Bush and Kerry, Oct. 8 and Oct. 13. The VP debate is next Tues. Oct.5.

oh well. Interesting that he could have lost the debate on points, but won the debate on character... hence winning over more voters.

Bush also won votes when he said at the end that there would be no draft, an issue Kerry didn't mention. Kerry also tried to sound very hawkish, something that doesn't play well with his base.

I was watching Local Fox in the Portland Oregon area and the dork from the Washington Bureau said. " During the cutaway the President looked uncomfortable." I was watching during the time he was answering the questions and you just can't fake Class. Bush -1 Kerry -0. It's not how you look when you're talking it's what you're saying. Thats why I'm voting for "W The President".

I think that the public right now might be starstruck by Kerry's command of the debate stage, but that in two days they will be back to not trusting the creep.
They'll stick with the Commander in Chief that they have.
Its still a LOCK.

At first, I was upset that Bush didn't hammer Kerry with all the material he's provided. But I believe there's a plan. I think the whole thing's a rope-a-dope. Let the fish have the line, go easy on him, give them hope and talking points to gloat over, and let them crow from the rooftop that their man has a plan, and Bush made a mistake and can't win with his plan.

Let them say it often and visibly. Then hammer the insurgents and terrorists in Iraq, give a lot of the credit to the new Iraqi trainees, and show everyone that you were right to begin with. Totally take the air out of their balloon right before the election. I think they real plan is to prove they're right and take the wind out of Kerry's sails at the last minute.

I think they need to change the format for the next two debates and run it like "The Gong Show". They can have electronic voting, like American Idol, so the public can "gong" Kerry when he lies...maybe give him about 40,000 volts when he tells a big lie.

Put down the koolaid. Our beloved President didn't redeem himself. Kerry looked nervous at first, but Dubya fumbled.

Kerry won this round on points.
