Mount St. Helens is not finished, earthquake activity resumes
USGS Webicorders | 10-2-04 | Self

Posted on 10/01/2004 11:41:40 PM PDT by Crazieman

The earthquakes did discontinue for several hours after the eruption. An odd harmonic indicator showed up on seismographs for a few hours that could have indicated magma movement.

The earthquakes have drastically kicked up and have resumed their original pattern prior to the eruption.

Prior, Eruption, and Post

Well after post-eruption

Mount St. Helens will be a footnote in history when John Kerry implodes one month from now.

I'm no expert in this area. However, I've been watching this for some time and noticed that the tremors (shaking) are now lasting for longer periods of time than before the eruption.

They keep saying that it's just going to "burp" but I'm not so sure.

The eruption today seemed to be at the end of the fissure, so one can guess that more eruptions can happen along the fissure.

It is all really speculation IMO.

They said the rocks spit up today were the size of automobiles gives one an idea of size in relation to what pics ore being posted.

A poster on another thread also wrote that the big blow years ago started with earthquakes such as now and it was two months till she blew her top.

I wish the news media would put in large writing dates of pics they show and time, as they show old pics and new ones and repeats of todays we are getting confused.

Also they need to use the word hypothetical and speculation more.

Some viewers are kids and it can be scary if they live in the area with this taking over local news.

My adult son is concerned about the ash having a tracheostomy device so I have to keep using the word speculation on Ash fallout. When it actually starts dusting our deck we will worry about it, we do have a plan but he need not get worked up and have the stress cause broncial spasms.

Bottom line parents need to explain things to the kids if the media won't be more clear on what pics they are showing.

I had a friend stop by as she spit today and then she took her kids to the movies and when she got home the news was showing todays action over well she called me saying its going againg, no that was a repeat of earlier but there was nothing on the tv screen to explain that it gets confusing.

I'll bet Kerry hates it when the media reports on hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanic eruption etc rather than his campaign. It ain't meant to be Johnny.

I believe I said something along the lines of "She's just clearing her throat... She's getting ready to sing" or something along those lines... ;)

John Kerry would probably hate the fact I equated his campaign to something as spectacular as a volcano erupting. LOL

A poster on another thread also wrote that the big blow years ago started with earthquakes such as now and it was two months till she blew her top. I don't know if you were on same thread I was. I made a comment to that effect on another thread and I think it may have been misunderstood by some. Here is what I based my comment on. http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/Volcanoes/MSH/May18/MSHThisWeek/32228/32228.htm

"It ain't over, folks."

Quite correct. And it could continue like this for a few days, a few weeks, or even months. I climbed in the garage rafters today to try and find a old text book I have that has information about the Mt. Lassen eruptions in the early 1900's. I recall that they were similar in nature to the type of thing we are seeing now at MSH.

No luck so far.

What I would really like to know is the progress of the magma body. Since it is molten and fluid, its location could be fairly easily determined by seismic refraction work, and the comparison of P-wave and S-wave paths (S-waves, or shear waves, only travel through solids).

I think today's eruption was like the fizz from a newly opened champagne bottle. The ascending hot magma body is driving superheated steam (ground groundwater) and hot, ashy gases before it. I don't think we have seen the "real deal" yet. If the magma does not have the energy and momentum to erupt to the surface, we may just see this sort of thing several times over.

No one who remembers her behavior in 1980 thought she was done with this episode yet. She'll be rumbling for years now, and a big one will happen within 2 months.

Oh LOL it was you. I had just explained your post to my son this morning during shift 1/care routine and shortly after she spit.

Now my son is making me put disclaimers of fact or speculation on everything I say, yea he is a smart ass.

There will probably be a series of these explosions that will gradually clear the throat, and in the most likely scenario, make way for the magma to then rise up to the surface and add to the dome," said U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) volcanologist Chris Newhall.

Successive eruptions could come with less buildup than yesterday's event, Newhall said — a view that seemed to be corroborated by the rapid ramp-up in seismic activity after the blast. "It's already broken through once, so it will be easier to break through the next time," he said. "But we don't know when it might happen. It could be hours, it could be days."
And there's also a chance the volcano will simply quiet back down.

Per Seattle Times http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2002052245_volcano02.html

I remember back in 1980 when she blew, it had been making noises for a couple of months to the best of my memory then quieted and started again. I think people were thinking it would quiet again like before and is why so many were caught and killed when it did blow -- big.

IT is an exciting event no doubt, if you don't live down stream from the much running off.
