Former Saddam general captured in US, Polish-backed raid

BAGHDAD, Oct 2 (AFP) - A former general in Saddam Hussein's armed forces was captured along with nine other people in counter-insurgency operations conducted by Polish, US and Iraqi troops in south-central Iraq on Saturday, the military said.

"As a result of the operations, 10 suspects were detained, including a man who was a general in Saddam Husseins former army and is wanted by Iraqi police," the multinational force said in a statement, without identifying the general.

Five of those detained were quickly released after questioning at the scene, it said.

A cache of AK-47 rifles and ammunition was also recovered along with anti-government propaganda.

The operations, which took place near the mainly Shiite Muslim town of Hilla south of Baghdad, were "launched in order to prevent terrorist attacks" in the region, the military said.

Poland sent 2,500 troops to Iraq last year in the wake of the US-led invasion and heads up a multinational division of 6,000 soldiers, including 2,500 Poles, in south-central Iraq.

Polish-backed raid

Wow, and this coming in just a couple of days after Kerry was saying in the debate that America is going it alone and hinting that the coalition members present weren't really doing anything. I swear Kerry is the master of timing.

Hmm... If Saddam had his power apparatus from sunni segment of Iraqi society, what then did [presumed sunni] saddamite general do in a shia area? Given the present intercommunal relations in Iraq, it's strange that he was there.

I was doing my Kerry impersonation. Kerry never mentioned Poland the other night when he said we were going it alone.

"I think they're just after Britain? "

UK - about 8000
Italy - 2700
Poland - 2500
Ukraine - 1650
Netherland - 1300
...

There should be also about 3000 soldiers from South Korea, but I'm not sure If they have already arrived to Iraq.

Some Kerry hack was on Fox and Friends this morning claiming Polish officials have said Bush lied to them and tricked them into joining the coalition. Of course F&F didn't challenge her assertion or ask for clarification. Same ole, same ole.

In the post-debate media feeding frenzy, a commentator on Fox mentioned that despite President Bush's remarks about Poland helping in the fight, their troops did not serve in Iraq until after the war.

This is a bunch of hoo-hah, as Polish commandos were some of the first troops in combat, seizing the oil loading infrastructures near the Persian Gulf that had been rigged to blow. If the explosives had gone off as intended, we would still be trying to clean all of the oil out of the Persian Gulf, which would have less life in it than the Moon.

At first, I was wondering what an Iraqi general was doing in the US and I was also wondering why Poles were raiding in the US.

Was this guy one of the cards in the Iraqi deck-of-cards? How high up the chain of command?

"Kerry never mentioned Poland the other night when he said we were going it alone."

He didn't mention them the other night, but he
has mentioned them before.

Along with Great Britain and Australia, Poland
is a member of the Axis of the Coerced and Bribed. ;o)
