On this 10th anniversary of the unveiling of the revolutionary Contract With America that transformed American politics, let's hoist a brew to Newt Gingrich -- the one-time college professor and legislative maverick whose bold initiative restored the principles of limited government and individual responsibility to a prominent and lasting place on the American political agenda.

Just one decade ago, over 300 Republican house members and candidates stood on the Capitol steps and signed the Gingrich-inspired Contract With America. At the time, the Democrats had been in control of the House of Representatives for 40 years. And in the 1994 off-year elections -- with a popular president in the White House, the nation at peace, and the economy still enjoying the momentum it had gained during the Reagan years -- the Democrats smugly expected to extend their majorities in both the House and the Senate.

And then the Gingrich revolution struck like a nuclear-tipped missile from outer space, and the Democrats never knew what hit them. Ten years later, they still don't have a clue..............

I cut out and magneted to my refrigerator a photo from the LA Times back in the day of Newt with the caption "I honestly believe Michael Dukakis is nuts."

Big surprise number 2 Marion Berry, But Alice Cooper as number 3 ....was kind of shocking. Read below:

Party on, dudes! Entertainers and other celebrities who support President Bush are coming out of the closet, and none of them has hotter things to say than Alice Cooper, the old heavy-metal shock rocker who is now a big fan of the President and says rock stars who've jumped on the John Kerry bandwagon are treasonous to their music and morons to boot.

Cooper, 56, singled out Sheryl Crow, Dave Matthews, James Taylor, and Bruce Springsteen, among others, as rockers who, in his view, should be avoiding political statements.

"To me, that's treason," Cooper (aka Vincent Damon Furnier) told the Canadian Press news service as he embarked on a 15-city Canadian tour this summer. "I call it treason against rock and roll, because rock is the antithesis of politics. Rock should never be in bed with politics."

Cooper said anyone who listens to a rock star in order to get information on whom to vote for is "a bigger moron than they are. Why are we rock stars? Because we're morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night, and very rarely do we sit around reading the Washington Journal."

"Besides, Cooper added, "when I read the list of people who are supporting Kerry, if I wasn't already a Bush supporter, I would have immediately switched. Linda Ronstadt? Don Henley? Geez, that's a good reason right there to vote for Bush."

Meanwhile, magician Wayne Alan along with other performers -- mostly actors, comedians, and musicians -- have formed a group called "Entertainers For Bush," which has urged Hollywood celebrities who privately back the President to openly declare their support for his reelection.

The group has identified a large number of "celebrity entertainers" who already publicly support the Bush campaign, including performers who appeared at the Republican National Convention such as Brooks & Dunn, Sara Evans, the Gatlin Brothers, Ron Silver, and Lee Ann Womack.

On its Web site, the group names a number of other "celebrity entertainers" it says are also public supporters of President Bush, including Aaron Buerge, Drew Carey, Shannen Doherty, Lara Flynn-Boyle, Vincent Gallo, Kelsey Grammer, Angie Harmon, Patricia Heaton, Don King, Dennis Miller, Chuck Norris, Ted Nugent, Jason Priestley, Freddie Prinze Jr., John Rhys-Davies, Kathie Lee Gifford, Kid Rock, Pat Sajak, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Brad Paisley, Jessica Simpson, Tony Sirico, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Britney Spears, Fred Thompson, Steve Tyler, and Bruce Willis.

Hollywood stars may still be overwhelmingly liberal Democrats, Marxists, or would-be bomb-throwing revolutionaries, but it's refreshing to learn that a bit of diversity exists in the political views of the entertainment community -- even if it leaves these brave dissenters from leftist orthodoxy open to the risk that they may "never eat lunch" in Hollywood again.

Invoking a movie analogy, Dowd rants that at a time when "Americans want tough guys who will protect them from Al Qaeda, the White House has cleverly co-opted the imagery of Westerns, leaving Mr. Kerry to star in a far less successful movie genre: the Eastern."

In Westerns, she continues, the heroes are men of action, while "in Easterns, the heroes have windy, nuanced dialogue, delivered with a lockjaw in mansions on Beacon Hill and on windsurfing expeditions off Nantucket. In Easterns, the effete heroes get upset when the wrong kind of people join their Boston clubs, and quibble . . . about the rules when suit jackets must be worn."

The heroes in Hollywood Westerns, says Dowd, "treat womenfolk with gallantry, but tell them to stay back. In Easterns, Teresa [Heinz Kerry] rides shotgun and calls the opposition 'idiots.' There's a reason Easterns never caught on in Hollywood. High tea in a drawing room is just not as compelling as high noon in the town square."

Couldn't have put it better myself, Maureen. Except that it's not just style we're talking about here -- it's substance. And therein lies Kerry's fundamental problem with the American people.

I was happy before he was Speaker and made noise about the Contract, but when he went on TV after the Contract landslide and spoke forever, he killed the momentum. What a truly boring speech. He had probably the best platform ever--the MSM were cowed and the Rats were cowering--and he plays college professor.

I am much happier with DeLay in charge. Hastert can be the teddy bear...Newt can be the professor...give me the EXTERMINATOR's style any day.

Whn I scrolled down at Iconoclast, I noticed sKerry's debate listick and thought he looked very made up overall. I suppose that's how they toned down the orange tan. They must have "leaked" the manicure to cover for the time spent applying makeup.

What I want to know is what happened to the Contract with America?

More specifically, I'd like to know why, after so effectively mobilizing around a specific program in 1994, and equally effectively delivering the message (remember the ad in TV Guide?), the Republicans have failed to learn from their own success!

I kept waiting for them to produce a similarly orchestrated campaign in 1996... and 1998... and 2000... and 2002...

I know what you are saying. I could understand if "contract with America" didn't work and the republicans lost a bunch of seats in congress but the exact opposite happened.
