For a second night Sunday, about 170 Wells College students planned to sleep in the lobby of the administration building or in the 15 tents set up on the lawn outside.
They plan to protest the college trustees' decision Saturday to admit male students in 2005 to the all-women's college in this Finger Lakes village until the board reverses its decision, said sophomore Rachel Crosbie. "The school can't really function with over half the student body not going to classes and sleeping out in the hallways," she said.
College President Lisa Marsh Ryerson said she met with students Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon and told them Wells is committed to going coed. "This is just a day after the decision was announced, and the entire community is working through a range of responses to the decision," she said.

Seems the hypocrisy has not changed.
Um, sure they can sweetie. After you miss the specified number of classes because of your organized temper-tantrum you'll be dropped and mummy and daddy will have to pay for you to take the classes again.
And hey, if they had to let wymmyn into all-male academys.... what's good for the goose and all that. Boo-fricken-hoo.
I've exchanged emails with a Wells student I know. She's a good person, but is opposed to the coed change. I've raised some of the same points you make: the hypocrisy over opposition to admitting men, whereas the same feminists were so fired up to force men upon VMI and the Augusta National Golf Club. I'll repost if she provides an interesting reply.
My point of view is that if people want to have an all-girls school, there's nothing wrong with that, so long as they respect the rights of others to make corresponding choices.
Correcting the error in my previous post, of course I meant to speak of forcing women, not men, on VMI and Augusta.
Well, we used to have a saying at Hobart:
Keuka to bed
Wells to wed
William Smith for conversation
I wonder if this is still true
"The school can't really function with over half the student body not going to classes and sleeping out in the hallways," she said.
That is such an outdated stereotype -- most men are not like that anymore.
Hehehehe....sure it can. It ceases to function when your mommy and daddy stop paying the bills, though...
Actually, I find this pretty interesting. If it weren't for radical feminism, the single-sex option would not have all but disappeared in this country, depriving lots of parents of K-12 kids and college students a CHOICE.
These young women want their choice preserved. Do you think NOW will come out in their defense?
As for VMI, that has to rank as one of the worst court decisions in history.
It's not right for the women to push their way into a men's school. As a woman I think that is wrong. Just as I think this is wrong if it is the same thing. However, did the men push their way in here or did the school make the decision on its own?
How is Wells different than The Citadel?
Maybe they should go camp out at the Citadel.
Ahhh, it's good to hear that so many Freepers are on the side of my alma mater (VMI). I knew we were screwed when Ginsberg read the decision. Thankfully Scalia and one other judge voted to keep VMI all-male. My alma mater is now a shadow of its former self.
I'd like to agree, but it seems to me that VMI is a state-supported institution and therefore should be open to any qualified candidate. Is this college using taxpayer money? If not, it is ok in my book for them to choose anyone they want and reject who they don't want.
That said, it appears from the article the school administration has freely decided to admit men, which is their perogative. If other students don't like that, they are free to choose another school.
HEADMISTRESS: "Mildew has a wonderful student body!"
MO HOWARD: "Yours wouldn't be so bad either if you lost 20 pounds."
Well one question to ask would be the involvement of public $$$ at the school. If the school accepts government money then it's going to have to follow the rulings in the other 'public school' cases. If completely private then it can do what it wants (including go coed if that's what the board wants).
Of course, I know we can count on all the usual left-wingers to join us protesting these sexists who want to maintain a single sex institution in violation of the law!!
When I was at Cornell, Wells ran a Friday and Saturday night shuttle bus down to Ithaca. It was known as the "F*ck Truck."
The girls were pretty beastly, even compared to Cornell and Ithaca College chicks. A lot of beers at the Palms or Ruloffs would do wonders for their appearance, though...
How many private schools (i.e. do not accept federal assistance) are there in the U.S.?
B-I-Bo; Bo-I-B; B-I-Bicky-Bo bump. A wise guy, eh?
