Even though it's the day before a 3-day-long Jewish holiday, I put my cooking and preparations aside to hear a speech by President Bush on the campus of Oakland Community College in Farmington, MI.
Security was VERY VERY tight. My son and I got tickets for the event from jewsforgeorge.com. The rally was held on the sports field and the grass was very muddy. No one wanted to sit or stand on a Bush/Cheney poster and disrespect the President and the Flag, and there weren't any Kerry/Edwards posters at the site. Anyway my New Balance sneakers lost their nice white look and the hem of my skirt got filthy. It was much worse for a group of Black church people wearing their Sunday best. Not to mention the Secret Service who were very distinctive with their shaved heads, mirror shades, black suits, wingtips and earpieces.
My son and I had tickets to the "inner circle" which was closer to the President, not that close and the ground was even muddier. And of course being a very short person I could barely see the President, but there he was, and gave an excellent speech, which was interrupted frequently by whistles, cheers and chants of FOUR MORE YEARS!! Every time he mentioned his opponent's name, the crowd chanted "Flip Flop! Flip Flop!"
Anyway my son and I had a great time. Were any other Michigan FReepers there? If you saw a short red-haired lady wearing a black trench coat with a tall, good-looking bearded guy wearing a black suit and a pumpkin-colored shirt, that was me and my son "kazatzkeh."
Could be, but as soon as you walked away from the field, the grass was bone dry.
We were part of the great unwashed with green tickets in the back. The whole back area was grass and mud. Thick mud with fresh clear water. We were sinking down in the grass. There were also some tire tracks sunk about 8" deep. This was not from a rainfall a week ago. I'm not complaining as it was great to have the kids see, I'm sorry, hear) the President, but man, it was a mess.
Ford World Headquarters is on the regular flight approach to Metro Airport. I've flown over it many times and it is very distinctive from the air.
We parked on Orchard Lake Rd. south of 12 Mile and about a mile from the OCC campus western entry where Farmington PD were checking tickets before allowing people to board the busses.
After boarding the busses we were driven to 12 Oaks Mall in Novi and transferred to other busses, tickets checked again. I was kind of nervous because I had left my personal ID in the car, all I had with me was my ticket, cellphone, a prayer book, a psalm book and a picture of the Lubavitcher Rebbe with the 23rd Psalm in Hebrew.
Anyway then from the mall we got on the busses again and drove back to OCC where we went through an airport-style security check. I got through.
The mud on the field was really bad. Fortunately my sneakers and my skirt can be cleaned, other ladies and gentlemen dressed up, probably ruined their shoes.
If you saw a short red-haired lady in a black trenchcoat, in the company of a very good-looking guy in bolack suit and pumpkin-colored shirt, that was me and my son.
After the rally we just walked out the west entrance of the campus and back to where we parked our car. Right next to our car was the car of a "KKK" (Krazy Kerry Klown) protestor. I was tempted do add another decoration to the junker: a Bush/Cheney sticker on the rear windshield. However my son persuaded me not to. "We're Republicans and we respect others' property."
i believe my bus took you guys,if you remember a dude at the front with a vest and sunglasses that was me,but im pretty sure that was your group because there were several jews aboard (i liked having jews aboard to,kind of a conforting feeling from god)
