By ALEX PEAKETHE BBC has secret plans to boost morale after a nuclear war — by screening The Sound Of Music.

The 1965 Julie Andrews classic was picked to top the Beeb’s doomsday schedule because of its “feelgood” factor, it was revealed yesterday.

The musical is in a list of TV and radio programmes to be broadcast to survivors for 100 days from 20 secret underground bunkers.

Academic Dr Ian Bradley, who uncovered the plans, revealed yesterday: “Shortly after the siren sounds we can expect to see and hear Julie Andrews.”

Other programmes on the list — drawn up during the Cold War — include the comedy Hancock’s Half Hour and a selection of Radio 4 afternoon plays.

Dr Bradley, a theology professor at St Andrews University in Fife, said: “Senior executives spent a lot of time deciding what to show.”

He said the National Anthem was ruled out for broadcast because it is too gloomy.

Disco classic Stayin’ Alive also got the thumbs-down.

Dr Bradley said: “The Sound Of Music topped the list. Although more than 40 years old it remains a real favourite.”

The BBC said: “This is a security issue so we cannot comment.”

My second-grade teacher played the "Sound of Music" soundtrack incessantly during breaktimes. As a result, I really grew to hate and loathe that movie. It got to the point where I was about an inch away from taking her album Trapp shooting.

Even though I love watching and performing in community theater, my wife still desn't understand why I won't go anywhere near a SoM audition or performance.

I know Dr. Bradley (the academic quoted), and can well imagine him laughing at his discovery.

If it gets The Sound of Music on the B.B.C., I vote for a nuclear war right now.

I'd rather die in the blast, less painful.

Even Stanley Kubrick couldn't think of something this bizarre.

You can't make this stuff up folks.

The BBC won't have to worry about broadcasting anything, in the event of a nuclear holocaust, because, being in central London, they will probably be one of the first to go.

Didn't the Holnist Army in the movie "The Postman" play "The Sound of Music" as a morale booster?
