Bogus Debate E-Mails Attempt To Dupe Media

Bogus Debate E-Mails Attempt To Dupe Media Messages Arrive At Station Before Debate Starts

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- As Election Day draws near, some are using every avenue possible, including trying to manipulate the media, to gain voters and dissuade others from showing up to vote, NBC 4's Duarte Geraldino reported.

An organized e-mail campaign was created in an attempt to influence NBC 4's post-debate coverage of Tuesday night's vice-presidential debate between Vice President Dick Cheney and Sen. John Edwards.

The debate had not even begun when NBC 4 started receiving e-mails at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday from "viewers" who claimed to not only have watched the debate, but also declared a winner.

The e-mails all listed names and home addresses, but when NBC 4 attempted to find a telephone number for the "viewers" -- Gerry Kline and Milo Jones -- the station had no luck.

Telephone operators were of no help, so a drive to the addresses listed on the e-mails was necessary. The address for "Milo Jones" was on North Main Street, but Main Street in downtown Columbus only goes east and west. There also was no 47 Main Street going east or west, Geraldino reported.

The other e-mail from "Gerry Kline" had a Stringtown Road address from Grove City. Addresses on Stringtown Road end in the 2500s, meaning the address the person who sent the e-mail gave doesn't exist.

Political scientist Dean Lacy has a theory on what the real authors of the e-mails had in mind.

"One person, assuming a lot of different names, can make it look like an entire town was backing one candidate over the other," Lacy said. "Voters don't usually jump on the bandwagon and say, 'I am going to support this candidate because I think he is winning,' but they might. They might think, 'If my candidate can't win, there is no point in turning out.' "

Experts say the best advice for voters is to cast a ballot for the candidate that best represents their interests and to not let pre-election polls or other voters influence your vote.

Must've been Edwards. If it was Cheney, it would've been in the headline.

Yep as I've been saying all along. Now how do we on the right combat, mobilize and organize against this?

Dear xxxx,

What a difference a week makes -- last Tuesday some pundits were predicting the end of our campaign. As you all know, reports of our demise have been greatly exaggerated. Last Thursday, John Kerry took the stage and did his job. He looked presidential and he scored a decisive victory against George Bush. The momentum has shifted -- in nearly every public poll taken since the debate, we now are leading or tied.

In a tight race, things change very quickly -- this is why it is so important that we react to everything. Become part of my rapid response team and join the Kerry-Edwards Media Corps today.

Election Day is just four weeks away. During the close of this campaign, we will not let a single charge go unanswered and we will stay on the offensive. The Kerry-Edwards Media Corps is a vital part of this rapid response network. Tens of thousands of you have already joined and are making a difference.

Last Thursday in Miami, I saw firsthand how hard the Bush campaign tried to spin the debate. They were searching for any angle. Our campaign, with your help, made sure the truth got out.

Tonight, in Cleveland, John Edwards will face Dick Cheney in the vice presidential debate. Cheney is a superb debater and he has the format and rules that he wanted. However, he has to try and defend a record of failure. Bush and Cheney may have a failed administration, but they have an experienced campaign that will again try hard to spin the debate. I am here in Cleveland right now to make sure that doesn't happen, but again I need your help.

http://johnkerry.com/response

After the debate is finished I will send all of you an important e-mail that highlights some of the key moments. If you can contribute a little bit of time, creativity and energy, we'll supply you with all the information you need to become a member of our online communications team.

Thank you,

Joe Lockhart
Senior Advisor

P.S.
Again, look for an e-mail from me after tonight's debate.

."..the best advice for voters is to cast a ballot for the candidate that best represents their interests and to not let pre-election polls or other voters influence your vote."

Hopefully, most people will vote this way.

But I do think efforts at FR and other conservative groups are affecting the MSM and also the sleeping citizens. So you are right....we need to keep thinking of ways to combat the lies and distortion.

Never got the follow ups from the Edwards-Cheney debate as promised by the Lockhart email, perhaps there wasn't much to flood the media with, but here's the text of the call-t0-action from the Kerry internet action team after the first debate.

Dear xxxxx,

John Kerry won the hearts and minds of millions of Americans on Thursday; and with your help, Kerry won in the important, online polls. Thank you!

Now, we need you to keep the momentum going over the weekend and into next week with letters to the editor.

Thursday night's win was so huge that everyone -- newspaper reporters, talking heads, political pundits, and, most importantly, undecided voters across the country -- are heralding Kerry's victory over Bush in the foreign policy debate. Jay Nordlinger, managing editor of the conservative National Review, argued in his editorial yesterday, "Don't Shoot the Messenger," that Kerry clearly won the debate:

I thought Kerry did very, very well; and I thought Bush did poorly -much worse than he is capable of doing. Listen: If I were just a normal guy -- not Joe Political Junkie -- I would vote for Kerry.

And newspapers like The Arizona Republic, which earlier endorsed George Bush, led with an editorial Friday admitting Kerry's resolve and decisive victory:

This newspaper has been supportive of Bush and much of his prosecution of the Iraq war, but it was clear to us the president was beaten decisively by his challenger in this 90-minute contest.

As John Kerry and John Edwards advance to the upcoming debates, you have an important role to play. John Edwards and Dick Cheney will debate Tuesday night. John Kerry and George Bush will meet again in a town hall on domestic policy Friday night.

Write letters to the editor of your local and state newspapers about Kerry's Thursday night victory. When you can, write in response to articles published this weekend. Click here to send a letter to your local newspaper.

Please emphasize in your letters that John Kerry proved he has the character and conviction to be our next president at the first presidential debate in Miami. He showed strength, resolve and a steady command of the facts. While Bush repeated shallow promises, Kerry laid out specific plans to hunt and kill the terrorists, and to offer a fresh start in Iraq so we can finish the job there.

Thank you,

Amanda Michel
Internet Team

considering the contents of the debate-related DNC action-alert someone posted here the day of the debate, I think we can safely assume that all such pre-debate e-mails came from folks on the DNC email pinglist.

Well, I logged onto MSNBC right as the Vice President ended his closing statement. There was no link to the poll. Refreshed the page, there was a link "Who Won". Click on it, there were already 60,000 votes and Edwards had 89% of the votes. It was rigged by the kooks at MSNBC so they would have something to talk about.

Also, I find it hard to believe that within a span of 15 seconds that there were 60,000 votes registered. There ended up being just over 1 million (about 1,025,000) votes the next day when I logged in from work (about 3 pm). So, that was a little over 15 hours, which roughly translates into 68,333 per hour or 1,138 per second.

So, I could have logically expected to see about 17,000 votes within the 15 seconds it too me to refresh the page, go to the link, vote, and see the results. I didn't. I saw over 60,000 votes.

And, even if you assumed some diminishing returns, this would be statistically unlikely. In addition, almost every poll known to man has the race within about 5 points (or closer), so the skewing to near 90% to either candidate would be suspect. Then, you throw in the fact that Dick Cheney gave Lil' Johnny BooBoo an absolute drubbing (even by Chrissy Matthews accounts) and something seems well off.

So, I think most everyone knows that these polls were rigged not through the DNC efforts, but they appeared to get a helping hand from the MSNBC techie squad putting the poll up.

More attempts to brainwash the masses. Not working, gang. Post it on the web, then talk about it on TV as much as you want. We're standing in the gaps now. Your days are numbered. You should ask for a gold watch while you can.

Somehow I find this difficult to believe, I mean is a lie the truth? Lockhart is a propaganda slug. They KNOW that they CAN'T tell the truth. If they ever did, kerry would have to resign the race...

Interesting figures on that voting.

From what the polls sounded like that night of the debate, it was a well-organized effort.

Would your typical couch potato in America realize that?

Well, I doubt it. And, really, that's the problem with America: ignorant voters.
