Gigantopithecus blacki
was a species of giant primate that lived in SE Asia. Not much is known about them. The area isn't great for fossil formation. From what has been found, paleontologists have extrapolated a height of roughly 3 meters and a weight of ~500 kg. It lived up until about 400,000 years ago. There's some thought that it may be the origin of the Bigfoot and Yeti tales, assuming that they really survived until a later date than 400,000 years ago. (Long enough to have been observed by early humans.)
This creature is being described as 2 meters tall and only 100 kg. That's rather lanky for an ape. I wonder if there's a typo in the story.
