"no longer wants to fix it because of the "nasty messages from people who don't understand art."
There is nothing wrong with this artists work. She has done some serious work in the past. I agree with her that in the context of her primitive style that the mispellings are not a problem. I don't even think that these are mispellings. It is a 20th century notion that there is a "right" and "wrong" way to spell last names. The feverish attempts to denigrate this woman and her work are childish and ill-informed. Anyone on the city council that is harassing this artist should be replaced at the ballot box. Here's an excerpt from a geneology website -
"Spelling Variations
Background:
In most cases, if you turn back the clock less than a century, you will find at least one, perhaps more examples of a spelling change in a surname.
Many illustrious people frequently spelled their name in various ways including William Shakespeare who spelled his name Shakespeare, Shakespere, Shakespear, Shakspere and Shaxspere. Over the centuries names have changed greatly. "
You evidently haven't seen this 'piece'. I may not know about art, but I know about crap, and this is it.
I don't even resent the fact that my taxes paid for it as much as I resent it being such an eyesore in front of our wonderful new library.
If you are serious about your post, you should try hanging out on some other website where Ebonics and taxpayer funded sh***y art is appreciated.
but what about "Eistein"?
"Many illustrious people frequently spelled their name in various ways including William Shakespeare who spelled his name Shakespeare, Shakespere, Shakespear, Shakspere and Shaxspere."
So wright you are. In my own ancestry, in one family the father and his two sons spelt their surname three distict personal ways (Scots-Irish).
Starrat
Starratt
Starritt
My own great-grandfather is the source for my surname. In his lifetime he spelled it three ways (Swedish).
Andreasson
Andersson
Anderson
Reasons for spelling differences abound: Many people couldn't read and write, immigration, change of customs, etc.
No justifiable reason to be hard on this woman, who is apparently a legitimate artiste.
So because in this day and age we can find historical evidence that the name has changed, we are expected to except a misspelling that diverts from the currently accepted spelling?
That is kind of like moral relativism. (I will only accept you morality when it suits me.)
I understand that "Artists" have different concepts and ideas of how they see their "Art".
But to become upset and whine like she does because here art is not accepted by the people of livermore and then to say that she will correct it if the City pays.
that is rediculous.
If she were so concern about the art in the first place and thought that the misspelling were such and intracit part of that art she sould have included that with her explination.
Artist commonlly send discriptions of what their art represents especially abstract, because they are afraid that people will not understand.
I think this was just a lazy "artist" trying to cover a mistake and the get more money out of the City of livermore.
With all due respect, you are a fool.
You're kidding, right?
P.S. how many ways did Einstein spell his name? And what century are you living in?
It is a 20th century notion that there is a "right" and "wrong" way to spell last names. ""
I pray that you NEVER work as a payroll clerk. The absolute correct spelling of a person's whole name is critical for Social Security purposes. It is also critical for law enforcement. How would you like a serial killer be let out of jail on a smaller charge when the LEO's are checking for any other wants and warrants and there is a "so what" attitude on the spelling of the name? What if your kin was the serial killer's next victim? Still think it doesn't matter?
I would be incensed if my name were spelled wrong, especially on any legal document, credit card, Paycheck- ANYTHING.
In this day and age of terrorists using false ID and the wide scope of Identity Theft, I am astounded at your cavalier attitude in the spelling of names.
The "artist" is a total jerk. She made not one or 2 spelling errors, she made 11. The city paid her a princely sum of taxpayer monies to brighten up their new library and to provide some artistic influence in it's surroundings.
I would think she would be so ashamed at her monumental errors that she would be on the next flight out west and apologizing profusely to the taxpayers who paid her in a news conference, and then she should be offering to repair ALL the errors for FREE. FREE FREE FREE!!!!!
Paying her more money to come back and fix it sure falls into the adage we all grew up with:
How come there is NEVER enough time to do it right the first time, but there is ALWAYS enough time to do it over?
IMO, she owes the public a serious apology, and I hope she never gets another contract like this one. Someone who knows how to spell would be very happy to have the next chance at a job like this. Taxpayers in that county should be screaming.
Artist Maria Alquilar was initially paid $40,000 for the mosaic. Now, the city will pay another $6,000 plus her travel expenses from Miami for her to correct the work.
Alquilar blames city leaders for not catching what she calls oversights.
