Every year an independent tax watchdog group analyzes the average tax burden on Americans and then calculates "Tax Freedom Day." This is the day after which the money you earn goes to you, not the government. This year, tax freedom day was April 11. That's the earliest it has been since 1991. Its latest day ever was May 2, which occurred in 2000.
Recently, John Kerry gave a speech in which he claimed Americans are actually paying more taxes under Bush, despite the tax cuts. He gave no explanation and provided no data for this claim.
Another interesting fact: Both George Bush and John Kerry are wealthy men. Bush owns only one home, his ranch in Texas. Kerry owns four mansions, all worth several million dollars. (His ski resort home in Idaho is an old barn brought over from Europe in pieces. Not your average A-frame.)
Bush paid $250,000 in taxes this year; Kerry paid $90,000. Does that sound right? The man who wants to raise your taxes obviously has figured out a way to avoid paying his own.
Pass this on: Only 23 days till the election!
Off topic question...I thought I heard on the tube somewheres yesterday ( Beltway BOys?) that Teresa HK was going to release her tax returns this week...anyone else here can confirm?
Should say "Early Tax Freedom Day"
A thought to throw into the ring. The Tories here in Britain propose to make Tax Freedom Day a public holiday so that people are made more aware of the level of tax which they face. This is especially motivated because of 'stealth taxes' (i.e., tax hikes which are hidden from view) which have shot up under the Blair government.
What do FReepers think of such an idea?
This is a great idea, and would be funny in some Scandinavian countries when Tax Freedom day would occur sometime between Nov 1 and Dec 32.
We don't need yet another public holiday where the federales take an extended siesta while the rest of us work even harder to pay for it.
And in a Ketchup administration, Tax Freedom Day would be December 32nd (unless, of course, you're married to a condiment heiress from Africa).
