(Senator Mark) Dayton (D-MN) Closes D.C. Office Over Security Concerns. Advises no travel to D.C.

WASHINGTON-- Sen. Mark Dayton said Tuesday he is closing his Washington office because of a classified intelligence report which made him fear for the safety of his staff.

Dayton, D-Minn., said the office will be closed while Congress is in recess through Election Day, with his staff working out of his Minnesota office and in Senate space off Capitol Hill.

``I take this step out of extreme, but necessary, precaution to protect the lives and safety of my Senate staff and my Minnesota constituents, who might otherwise be visiting my Senate office in the next three weeks,'' he said on a call with reporters.

``I feel compelled to do so because I will not be here in Washington to share what I consider to be an unacceptably greater risk to their safety,'' he said.

Dayton said he could not describe the contents of the top-secret intelligence report, which was presented to senators at a briefing two weeks ago.

``None of us can predict the future,'' he said. ``I hope and pray that the precautions I've taken will prove unnecessary.''

Asked what advise he would have for Minnesotans who want to travel to Washington over the next few weeks, Dayton said, ``I wouldn't advise them to come to Capitol Hill. I would not bring my two sons to the capitol between now and the election.''

Why isn't this on the Main Stream Liberal CBS, and ABC and NBC yet. The liberal Star Tribune picked it up. Can't wait to see what they say about it.

"So, a senator can be informed of potential threats, but average citizens can't be? "Classified intelligence reports." BAH!"

Exactly.

I happen to live in Arlington, Va., and I work three blocks from the US Capitol.

If Senator Dayton knows of some threat to the welfare of those of us who live and work in Washington, DC, he is, I think, morally obligated to share that information with us.

RE: Teddy, LOL.

So why Dayton and no other member of Congress? This is very strange.

I was under the impression that after the Pan Am 103 incident, there was a "no double standard" rule to avoid situations like this.

"...or would you say his reaction indicates something is really about to go down in D.C.?"

Keep an eye on his colleagues. If they bug out in larger numbers than I would suspect that there is something to it. These guys are generally cowards. Well, that is, except John Kerry. He's only running home to get his gun. Yeah, THAT'S the ticket...

Oh so right. We pay for that information but we cannot know the facts. Congresspeople are NOT more valuable than the citizens. Citizens put them there and pay them to do this to us.

I got the same response from our MA D Olver, he will not endorse writing discrimination into the Constitution.

But by not having an amendment, these idiots refuse to see, that is EXACTLY what they are doing.

I'm not so sure this should so easily be dismissed as "Chicken Little" talk. The election is just three weeks away folks, and let's not kid ourselves, the radical Islamic scum would love to prove that they're still capable of pulling something big off. If the administration put out this message I think we'd probably be taking it fairly seriously.

OK so where is the elevation of alert levels, where is the news about it, I seriously doubt President Bush would be keeping a lid on this.

Perhaps DemoRats are planning something with the big Republican Rallies coming on at the capitol? I know the coalition for traditional marriage is going to be there this week for a big rally/

I live in MN and wrote him a letter about 3-4 months ago telling him NOT to support gay marriage, and he sent me back a nasty email about how he won't "infringe on someone's rights" I wish I would have saved that email, I know I screwed up I was pissed off and read it and deleted it. Then A little while later I knew that I should have saved it.

Send Markie another note, and he'll probably resend the same boiler plate message back to you.

If they still have the title of "Dumbest Man in the Senate," I am sure that Mark Dayton has won five times and retired the trophy. This is just the latest example that the man is dumb as a sack of hammers, as they say hereabouts.

His D.C. staff will be just as safe, no more no less, in their own offices, than in Senate space "elsewhere" in the Capitol. They will, however, be crippled in their ability to respond to requests from constituents for information and help, by being separated from years of files still in the (now closed) Senate offices.

"What a maroon!"

I'm flying to D.C from California next week for a week's vacation. I'll stop by the Senator's office and slip a note under the sniveling coward's door telling him that some of us will continue our normal lives and routines while he trembles in his shoes back in Mn.

If you're using Windows Outlook for mail, your emails are never completely deleted unless you erase them from a system file. Search for and open with Notepad, WordPad or Word the file named deleteditems.dbx in C:\Windows. Search the text for Dayton's name and you should be able to retrieve the contents of his lovely note. Looking forward to reading what he had to say.

;-)

Isn't MN a swing state? Are all the swing state Congressional members leaving Washington? Very interesting development.
