Bob Schieffer: "There should be a question about illegal immigration"

Posted on 10/12/2004 7:21:03 PM PDT by gs-conserv

Just saw Bob Schieffer, moderator of tomorrow nights debate, on Hannity and Colmes and he mentioned a "probable" question about illegal immigration. This brought to mind something I heard this afternoon on our local talk radio show about a crime that took place near Charlotte, this past weekend. The following article was in the "Charlotte Observer". Unfortunately, this being a typical liberal newspaper, you have to go all the way to the 10th paragraph, to realize the 6 suspects were all illegal immigrants.

I know this would certainly alienate some people, but I wish Bush would take a touch stance about this problem.

6 men accused of raping woman

Police: Unusual to charge so many, have so much evidence

KYTJA WEIR

Staff Writer

Six men were in custody Monday, charged with gang raping a 37-year-old woman visiting a Huntersville home over the weekend.

But Huntersville police are still looking for a seventh man.

The woman, whom police did not identify, visited a trailer home in the 11000 block of Cimmaron Road on the southwestern edge of Huntersville around 9:30 p.m. Saturday night, said Huntersville police Lt. Ken Richardson.

She was a friend of one of the men who lived there, off McCoy Road, Richardson said.

The friend and six other men held the woman at the home for at least six hours and repeatedly raped her, Richardson said.

The next morning she called police around 11:30 a.m. and went to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center to be treated for physical injuries.

Such rapes with multiple attackers are nearly unheard of in the town of about 32,300 people, Richardson said. Since joining the department six years ago, the lieutenant said, he hasn't seen a rape case with so many suspects -- or so much evidence.

But rape has been on the rise in Mecklenburg County this year. In the first half of 2004, the number of rapes reported to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police increased 11 percent from the same period in 2003. It's unclear, though, how many of the 156 reported rapes were gang rapes, a term for rapes with more than one suspect.

"It's not the victim's fault," Richardson said. "I believe people should be able to go where they want to go and be safe."

Huntersville police visited the home Sunday afternoon to collect evidence and found the men were in the country illegally. It's unclear what country they are from, police said. Investigators called immigration officials who detained the men while Huntersville police continued their investigation.

The woman identified five of the men, Richardson said, and the sixth offered a statement to police. They are still trying to identify and locate a seventh man who raped her, police said.

On Monday afternoon, police charged each of the six men with first degree forcible rape, first degree sexual offense and first degree kidnapping, Richardson said.

The men charged are Blas Ceron Santiago, 27; Rafael Ceron Santiago, 23; Alfredo Munoz Perez, 26; and Antonio Islas Lucio, 24. All lived at the trailer. Also charged are Eladio Castillo Castillo, 28, who lives in Cornelius; and Alejandro Morales Suarez, 25, who lives elsewhere in Huntersville, police said.

We have such a long porous border with Mexico and it is so easy to get over that it is very difficult to contain them. There are miles and miles of nothing where they can come across, and it would take more than a fence to keep them out. On top of that there are a lot of employers with entry level jobs they can't fill because people would rather stay on welfare and watch tv all day, so they hire illegals.

I was surprised to hear Scheifer say that about the debate questions. But actually I shouldn't be, early this year Rush, Sean and others had lots of seminar callers who would rail against Bush on the subject of immigration. I noticed that beyond Scheifer comments that CNN is planning on a new news special on illegal immigration. The press knows that this is a sore spot for Bush on the right. And they are starting to needle it for all its worth

Illegal immigration certainly depresses wages. With a labor shortage, many of those jobs americans won't do..would have to pay a decent wage and it would get some of the couch potatoes to work.
This should be a big issue with the young marginally employed and the minority citizens.
I won't vote again for a Republican who won't support greater immigration control. If we jailed some of the illegals in a hot SW prison..it would slow down the stream.
We could put some of the employers in with them. We would need to build a lot of temporary large desert prisons..kind of like the temp stuff at Rikers Island.

It's a winner for Kerry. Kerry will make some nothing comment about putting a few more National Guard at the border. He's done it before.

It will give people "hope" - that he's at least a little better than Bush. Bush will make some statement about hispanics which most citizen hispanics disagree with.

We'll see. Rove the "Genius" has Bush saying illegals don't effect jobs here, Iraq is the "center" of the WOT, allows two years of Talking Points about missed "allies" to go unchallenged and unexplained.

Yep. but Bush was warned long, long ago. That cheap labor campaign contribution pool must have been too tasty.

Bush will get nailed on "energy policy" too. Kerry will BS it with "change", giving the people hope. Bush is being prepped for lame defenses about drilling.

Just my prediction...

"a probable" question about illegal immigration"

OMG! A question?

The 5000 pound gorilla standing in the middle of the Republican platform must be giving way.

Do they dare bring this up with *a* question during the debate? This is so pathetic. The biggest, most threatening crisis facing this country, as our borders now resemble a Boston marathon of millions, creating epic fraud, coast to coast crime, not to mention the titanic national security time bomb it's created...And they may pose a probably question?

Those in DC are starting to feel the heat, otherwise, this wouldn't even be mentioned. I wonder how long they can continue to pour the third world into our country, before things get real ugly.

President Bush is getting bad advice, in my opinion - but then I don't see the Socialist Democrats pushing the issue either. So if the question is asked - it will be interesting to listen to the answer from both sides -

His proxies have already said it. Kerry believes it to, but is too smart to blurt it. Both parties are under the delusion, funded by the NIF's and others, that Hispanic citizens support amnesties and such.

The only person running who has made a coherent statement about illegals effecting jobs is Ralph Nader.

Both beltway parties have stood in stone cold silence for 20 years while millions pour into our country illegally, mostly unabated. Those in D.C. have actually aided and abetted this epic invasion.

Don't bother writing the WH. Stopping this flood of millions is not in their agenda, not part of their plan. We have written 1000s of times, voted, protested, boycotted, etc, etc along with millions of other American's. We came to the conclusion a few years ago, plain and simple, we are no longer being represented by the political elite. Period.

I suspect it is the same sort of folks that advised Clinton, G. Bush I, Regan, Carter, Ford, Nixon, Johnson, and Kennedy not to do anything about our pourous borders.
For some polititcal reason they seem to fear a backlash of some sort as a result of their taking measures to secure the border. I don't get it - anyone here legally should be appalled by the illegals being allowed to enter without consequence. I'd put the Sheriff of Maricopa Co. in charge.... put up camps in the Az. desert...automatic 1 year internment after a "hearing" no formal trial needed....no proof of citizenship - off you go...after one year of incarceration in those conditions...spartan but not tortuous....immediate trip to border crossing and supervised walk across the border....hasta la vista....
caught again -- (verify with fingerprint) - 2 years...etc etc. Simultaneous clamping down on the border area with National Guard....armed and dangerous - locked and loaded!!
And while we are at it - clamp down on the Canadian Border as well....terrorists aren't limited to entry via a southern route!!

Kerry says he would grant amnesty to most/some illegal aliens within 100 days of his inauguration. If he ends up being elected and grants even half the illegals citizenship, the dems will have the shock troops to take over all branches of government. Our Republic will be finished if this happens.

If there's a question about illegal immigration, the answers will be in the form of both candidates trying to out "Hispander" the other. Bush will trot out his dishonest amnesty-by-another-name. Kerry will insist that all illegals get Bush's amnesty plus a place "on the path to citizenship". Both will, of course, preface their pandering with some mumbled phrase about illegal immigration being wrong, or alien smugglers being bad.

If we're really lucky, they'll even throw some Spanish at us.

I have to believe he would get more support if he did something about the issue.

When Bill O'Reilly asked him a direct question on the subject, the POTUS only alluded to the extra Border Patrol personnel that have been added. Old news and woefully insufficient as a remedy and as an answer to the question. As for why he is so inadequate on this issue, could he be naive enough to think it will gain latino (read Mexican) votes? All the rest of us know that the vast majority of the illegals will vote Demonrat. And of course, the Sociali..er..Demonrats would be worse on the issue, as hard as that is to imagine.

Right on - I heard something tonight about Texas or one of the states thinking about a fence or wall - because it's getting so bad -

I know as one citizen - I was shocked the borders weren't closed when 9/11 took place - it was like saying - yeah, we might get attacked again - live with it - the borders are staying open. Guess they need all their meds and cheap labor that much - and the American citizen comes second to those -

What a nation this has become - we are being sold out by someone and I'd like to know who is giving President Bush the idea the citizens of this nation are happy with what is going on -

I also heard there might be a question on "marriage" - that also should be interesting. It is beginning to sound like this one(debate) is as one sided as the first debate. I certainly hope someone around President Bush warns him - but you know what - I think as long as he comes across as being himself and doesn't try to get "cute" - he'll do okay.

just my opinion - take care -

They better ask BOTH Bush and Kerry - I'm sick of Kerry skating on the hard questions (like list 3 mistakes you've made) Kerry HAS promised full amnesty to all that already live here. Now, Bush says he isn't offering amnesty but it still sounds too much like amnesty for conservatives..BUT if we could get KERRY on record of giving amnesty within 100 days, then the Dems couldn't bash Bush with it and maybe some of the undecideds, won't jump to Kerry because they are mad at Bush for his immigration policy.

I know what you're saying, but the ones that are here, need to at least be legal. People will say that they're "good, hard working people" and are willing to work jobs that other Americans won't do. That's true, but when they here illegally, they are already "criminals". I know they bring in some tax money & they spend a lot in this country, but I'm not sure it makes up for the social benefits they have - education, health care, etc. North Carolina, especially, draws a lot to the area, due to the ease of getting a drivers license - known to be one of the easiest in the SouthEast. Not to mention how many are illegally registered to vote.
I really think that the vast majority of Americans would be in favor of some tough action about this problem. Maybe a tough stance would discourage people from just walking across the border. I understand people wanting to better their way of life, because this country is an absolute "paradise", compared to what they are accustomed to, but they still need to go about it in a "legal" way.

The one that went to Mexico -

If the people don't "show" themselves soon on this issue - well, we will get what they want to give us - open borders and a nation of Mexicans and foreigners running things -

Only a show of those (numbers) against the illegals issue will get anywhere - in my opinion - because I believe as long as they think citizens don't "know" how many are angry about this - everything is okay and they can do what they want with this nation -

A writer for Newsweek estimated recently that there were 3 million coming over the border every year. In a later interview, he said that that estimate was conservative, that 5 million would be more accurate. He cited a recent study that found that illegals drain far more in social services than they contribute in taxes.

I fail to see how our biggest social problems----healthcare, education, social security---can ever be dealt with successfully while we still have this constant, overwhelming influx.

It's the forbidden subject, though. Leaders on both sides of the aisle have no incentive to deal with it. Only the taxpayers suffer---not the leaders of either party.

Thanks for the link Missouri - That is what I thought and I also think that Bush wants/needs the hispanic vote. He also has a nephew that is hispanic which plays into it.

On another thread, I mentioned that being from Texas, I would prefer a wall like the Israelis are building in Israel but have you heard what Mexico wants? They want that border to be like Europes borders - completely open where people can just drive in/out here/there without border stations, etc. Oh yeah, thats gonna happen. Do you realize how many BILLIONS of dollars the illegals send to Mexico every year?
