It's not polite. It is none of their business. It is not noble. It is not admirable. It is not cool to bring it up as a barb. Your mama would not be happy if you don't see that.
If you have to be told why, then you are not capable of understanding it.
What was the purpose in both of them mentioning her in their debates? WHY did they do it? Do you honestly believe they were trying to be "helpful?" WHY did they bring it up???
Then why not use Barney Frank and/or Jim McGreevey as examples, rather than Mary Cheney?
It's a big deal because it was an outstandingly crass, rude, boorish, low class response. It wasn't even a response, per se, there was no real logical progression to get to Cheney's daughter.
An equivalent statement by Pres. Bush would have been to answer a healthcare question by using Mrs. Edwards as an example of obesity, or make a point using Edward's dead son.
There is a cardinal rule in American politics that you don't score cheap political shots off of politicians children, whether they are adults or minors. Kerry and Edwards both crossed that line... because they are scum and will say anything to get elected.
Why? First, they want to create a wedge between Bush and his evangelical base. Second, they are worried about their own base of Reagan Democrats -- they want to attempt to keep them from crossing over to the GOP due to the gay marriage and other social issues.
In my 30+ years of political observations, this is one of the most crass, rancid and underhanded shots we've ever witnessed.
Everyone should also remember that Tereza Heinz has refused to release her tax records because she claims it would invade her children's "privacy." What sheer hypocrisy.

2. these Republicans, or many of them, will be so abhorred as to withhold their vote from Bush/Cheney next month.
I honestly believe that Kerry's been a lifelong politician because he would utterly fail at any job in the private sector. The man is THAT STUPID.
How do think Mary Cheney feels about having her sexuality used to try and hurt her father? Using a child against their parents as a political tool is sleazy at best.
No, everyone doesn't or at least didn't before the disclosure by Kerry. By what right does Kerry have to use the sexual orientation of Cheney's daughter in answering a question on lesbianism. She is not a candidate nor a spouse of a candidate.
If using a candidate's daughter to emphasize a point in a debate is acceptable then surely using Elizabeth Edward's obesity when discussing health care is acceptable also. How would John Edwards like to hear President Bush say that Elizabeth is a fat slob, which everyone knows and can see, and she represents a serious problem in our society which is obesity.
Because it's like talking about obesity and using Edwards wife as an example - now do you get it ?
For the same reason that it's wrong to discuss the sexual preferences of Kerry's daughters.
