I recently started a subscription to this magazine and was dismayed by this article. This is part of an annual Underrated/Overrated series.

Years ago, and I mean many years ago, American Heritage was a great read. It's sad what's happened to it.

They also think FDR's the most underrated President. More reason to cancel your subscription.

Ya, he only won the Cold War. Not a big deal. Carter was a much better president.

I was going to say that if this is like past U/O issues, American Heritage brings in celebrities and gives them free rein to give their ideas of what is underrated and overrated, but it says this guy is a regular writer for the magazine. So, screw 'em.

Another magazine that used to be good but I won't touch now is American History. They brought in Dougie Brinkley as top editor, and ran a glowing piece on Kerry in 'Nam soon thereafter. Oh, yeah, and he bashed Reagan in his very first issue.

I don't agree with the article, but I will compliment it by saying it makes a reasoned case, and provides food for thought. It is not off the deep end, like so very much of what comes out of academia these days.

outpouring of grief over the death of Ronald Reagan has tended to distort the historical record

I know a man. His wife's record was miserable. Often there were some dirty dishes in the sink when they went to bed. The laundry wasn't always done perfectly, she even mixed some darks with whites and he wore a pink shirt to work one day. She got a few dings in the family van as well. She even backed over the neighbor's mailbox once. But she loved her kids. She read to them as children. She helped with homework when they were teenagers, and even was hip enough to not embarrass them in front of girlfriends and boy friends. She treated her husband like a king. She stood by him when his company went for younger, less expensive workers. She encouraged him when he wanted to start a business. She never gave up when it failed, and took a part time job so he could try to start another. Her kids made it thru college even though they had to go to the local community college due to finances. Her husbands business never set any records, but she made him feel like the entrepreneur of the year. They got by just barely financially. But he looked forward to coming home to the not so perfectly clean house every night. Her kids left the nest, but fly back in very often because after all, she made it 'home.' They now have made a positive impact on the community. She had a cancer scare recently. A lot of family and friends were gathered together. All the outpouring of emotion over her tended to distort the historical record of her housekeeping skills, at least to someone who's life was not touched by the artistry of her love, and her natural ability and desire to lift others a little bit above where they were, and a little closer to where they could be.

Did the American Heritage Magazine ask any former Soviet Block Nations in Eastern Europe?

Did they ask the thousands of Millionaires Reaganomics produced?

Did they ask anyone in the Military that served under Reagan?

Did they ask most of South America?

Or did they simply ask a bunch of bed wetting liberal professors and Hollywood has beens who haven't met a dictator they didn't worship?

Yep, won WW-III without firing a shot.

The tribalists will never forgive him for ruining their
favorite workers paradise.

No, the most overrated President in history is/was/and most likely will always be: William Jefferson Clinton. In spite of all he did and didn't do, some still act as though he was the Second Coming.

There are other catagories to their "Underrated/Overrated" series. Among them are catagories for Civil War Generals and Musicals. The most overrated General was Robert E. Lee and most overated musical was My Fair Lady. That should give anyone other than the bitchy cranks of criticism sufficient pause to take the whole thing less seriously.

Re: Kevin Baker Overrated & Underrated, and the Overrated designation for Ronald Regan.

What a pack of liberal lies, I am much disappointed your magazine has sunk to such disgusting depths. It is just incomprehensible that you print such garbage. There is not on factual thing in that article, all the article does is print the lies by the Communist Left that is out to destroy our country.

Does not anyone there remember that under Jimmy Carter we had “stagflation.” Interest rates were around 20%. In fact the S&L problem was due to a change in laws by Jimmy Carter. In fact it was the tax breaks put in place by Regan that gave Clinton such a good economy. It the payoff of S&L losses that created the huge budget deficits and a congress that reneged on its promise to cut spending. Regan should be given credit for working with a hostile Democratic Congress, and getting most of his plans through.

Does not one remember the stores of how Regan would start a nuclear war with the Soviet Union? The Russians themselves admitted that it was Regan that brought them to their knees, with his fight on communism throughout the world, including helping Afghan rebels fight the Russians with shoulder fired anti-aircraft missiles.

Iran-contra was not flouting the Constitution, it was a way to fight the pro-communist in congress, and it must be pointed out that Regan was never convicted of any crime.

As for the lie “His reaction to the AIDS epidemic was sluggish and indifferent at best.” Fails to point out that Regan spent billion on AIDS before it was know what it was. Originally it was called “Gay Bowel Syndrome.” In fact the people who get it has not changed in 25 years, the majority are still Gays who practice anal intercourse and IV drug users. The spending on AIDS surpasses spending on all other disease, and can be stopped by a change in the promiscuity of the infected. This attack on Regan’s AIDS record is by self centered gays are not satisfied no matter how much we spend on it.

Furthermore, how can you say “air traffic controllers’ union was a watershed moment in the destruction of workers’ rights in America.” The air traffic controllers have a contract that does not allow them to strike, because they are doing a critical job. They broke the law. If Regan had let them get away with a strike you would be criticize him for not being a strong leaders.

It is getting both old and disgusting that liberal idiots, like those on your staff, want to rewrite history for their own sick political agenda. Why can’t you people get your morals together and print the truth as it is, not as you want in to be to insult one of our best Presidents.

This writer has some interesting strange ideas

FDR as underrated ??

FDR got us through the two greatest crises of the Republic;the Depression and the war;and built much of the framework that would actually win the Cold War

I wonder where this writer would put the Civil War (or, in the case of the South, the War of Northern Aggression)on the crisis list ?

The Cold War was won by every President from Truman through Reagan,

WRONG... Every president, right or wrong, maintained a holding action against the Soviets. Reagan was the first President to go into office determined to try and beat them. Grenada, Central America, Afghanistan, Poland etc etc, these were not holding actions, these were attempts to beat back the communists, AND IT WORKED. One can argue he got them when they were already weakened, but the fact is Jimmy Carter had them when they were in the same position of weakness and he let them walk all over him. Reagan won the cold war.

If he is overrated, why do those running for the presidency, even Democrats, still try to emulate him?
