'NAFTA-plus' talks aim for security pact

OTTAWA - Senior business and political leaders from Canada, the United States and Mexico are joining forces to establish a blueprint for a powerhouse North American trading bloc to take on the world, shielded by a Fortress America-style defence perimeter.

The trinational task force, which has the full backing of the three governments, has been charged with creating a road map toward a continent-wide customs-free zone with a common approach to trade, energy, immigration, law enforcement and security that would virtually eliminate existing national borders.

John Manley, the former Liberal deputy prime minister, will co-chair the task force and be joined on the panel by William Weld, the former Republican governor of Massachusetts, and Pedro Aspe, a former Mexican finance minister.

The task force will report to the prestigious U.S. Council on Foreign Relations, and received the blessing of Anne McLellan, Canada's Public Safety Minister, and Tom Ridge, the U.S. Homeland Security Secretary, during a meeting in Ottawa this week.

Ms. McLellan will be in Toronto on Monday for the first round of the task force hearings as the first step in creating a NAFTA-plus regional trading bloc to compete with the European Union, China, Japan and India.

"The European Union has expanded to 25 members and China and Indian have become major economic factors," said Mr. Manley. "At the same time the need to build co-operative security relationships has become more critical in the aftermath of 9/11. North America cannot but move forward and this initiative ... provides a road map for the future."

Former prime minister Jean Chretien was opposed to the idea of a North American defence perimeter.

The end of the United States as our founders envisioned it.

If it's only about trade ladies and gentlement, what does essentially eliminating our borders have to do with it? When this is accomplished, we will no longer be citizens of the United States, but citizens of the FTAA.

"The task force will report to the prestigious U.S. Council on Foreign Relations"

Is this the CFR that is linked to the trilatteral commission? They are a private org., aren't they? Yet this 'task force' will answer to them?

virtually eliminate existing national borders

Are these people crazy? The elite in Mexico will have their country to themselves, because the rest of Mexico will come here. There will be mass importation into America of more poverty, disease, ignorance and dependence, just what we DON'T need.

Any American leader who allows this is allowing invasion, and America will be no more.

It is truly depressing to come to a thread like this, on a forum frequented by people who claim to be loyal to the Republic of the United States of America, and find six reponses other than my own in an hour and a half.

Put a fork in her folks, she's done. If this is what sovereignty and self-determination mean to the general conservative, then the only thing left is writing the obituaries.

What a sad time in this nation's history.

We've already got so much trade --- we're facing trade deficits we've never before seen. Obviously this is far worse than trade, erasing the borders and selling out our sovereignty. For what? To line the pockets of a few? What is the reason for this?

Someone just pointed this out to me on another thread --- maybe gubamyster can get it to his ping list.

America is done, as we knew it.

This is no longer a Christian nation, and God has already hinted that, since we have decided we don't need Him, He has no obligation to prosper us. Debate, anyone?

History is repeating itself, people. But unlike most others, I blame the voters for all that has happened to precipitate this end, with one exception... NAFTA. America called, wrote and telegrammed elected officials to NOT pass NAFTA in 1993. Despite overwhelming opposition, the government stooges passed it anyway, claiming they know best and not ONE single job would be lost to NAFTA.

Bush 41 and Cliton/Gore alike supported it. THe damage has been done. Fatalistic? Duh... we told the public twelve years ago that this would happen. I just hope you are out of debt with enough resources to live on for life. No nation is going to come rescue this one.

OK, so I am sorry to be so negative. But I know this issue.

I normally do not post to such threads fearing that I might be missing some important "overall view" and miss seeing the forest for the trees and make an idjit of myself. After all, there are many, many more astute and better educated posters here whose responses I can learn from.

In this case, I must come out of my shell.

Reading the lines, and between the lines of this, I can only wonder if such a plan could be put in place before we realized what happened, and we found ourselves losing it all.

What I'm seeing here being proposed is the NA answer to the EU but with a far greater implication. Thee countries of the EU are still independent units and likely will stay that way as long as they are embattled harboring their centuries long resentment toward one another. To me, this sounds like a plan to eliminate the USA and make one large country of North America. Is this a correct reading of this?

Insane.
Could it happen? Bet your dollar/CD/peso it could.
Will I fight such an obvious threat to the Republic with each remaining breath.

Damn right.

Perhaps the lack of responses to this thread is that it seems so impossible, so wacko, so really out there that folks have brushed it aside?

They are going to destroy our sovereignty and this country. Part of the one world, global plan.

No more illegal aliens, no more borders, get back to work, pay your taxes, these people are going to need your money.

This jumped out at me from the article

"A task force source said Paul Martin has encouraged the initiative, though the Prime Minister would not be able to act on its recommendations unless the Liberals win a majority government."

Apparently our govt. is depending on a liberal majority in canadistans govt. to get this through.

Globalogne.

Glad my home is downwind of every military base and nuke facility. But after being reminded of the Soviet threat to bury us from within, I am not so sure the enemy will need to fire a single shot to take this country. I think they are in the process right now.

"I can only wonder if such a plan could be put in place before we realized what happened, and we found ourselves losing it all."

Have you heard this talked about in msm or by any political party? Only a few times have I heard of this trade bloc mentioned and that very vaguely. This will have profound implications on our lives and our children's lives, but silence reigns.
