Picking the President: Bush is the best candidate

12:36 AM CDT on Sunday, October 17, 2004

Americans want and need a president with a backbone steeled by courage and a heart tendered by compassion. Not since the beginning of World War II has America faced as much uncertainty about its national security and its economic prospects. The next president must have the firm conviction to persevere against Islamic terrorism and the empathy to give his fellow citizens a helping hand, even as he steadily guides the .....

Four years ago, when the world was much simpler, George W. Bush sought the presidency claiming that he had "a charge to keep." Having been tempered by the most eventful and consequential four years served by any U.S. president since Franklin D. Roosevelt's third term (1941-1945), Mr. Bush has earned the right to hold firm to his charge for another term.

This newspaper has seen the Texas Republican in action since his first days on the gubernatorial trail. Though he has stumbled and fallen at times, Mr. Bush has always risen to fight the next round. It's called conviction. It's called sticking. It's called guts. The challenges of these dramatic days demand an American president with guts. As Mr. Bush told his convention, "You know where I stand."

We do, and we wish we knew where John Kerry stood. To be honest, we wish John Kerry knew where John Kerry stood. The senator has been more clear about his positions lately, particularly on Iraq. But his record of vacillation cannot be overcome in a single campaign. What's more, aside from indulging in the fantasy that he can persuade the Europeans to contribute to the Iraq effort .....

It's pretty amazing that some of these large newspapers are endorsing President Bush. Sure, they spend much of their highly visible space bashing him, but as a lot of people have been saying for months, the final decision is going to be about which candidate can keep us safe and secure.

It has become painfully obvious, even to some of these most liberal of media outlets, that John Kerry would be disastrous for our national security and longterm health.

Nonetheless, this endorsement of President Bush will not stop the constant attacks on the President, and their work on behalf of the Democrat party will continue.

I spent a good chunk of the summer in Dallas with relatives who live there and who get the Dallas Morning News on their doorstep every day. I may as well have read the Philadelphia Inquirer. Newspapers don't get any more goofy-liberal.

For that paper to dismiss Kerry like a housefly and, more incredibly, to come back and praise Bush the way they did is very encouraging. It gives me great hope for the country.

I'll give the paper the benefit of the doubt and assume that the regular Saturday night "Bush parties" and eight bajillion "Bush-Cheney" yard-signs in and around Dallas had nothing to do with the paper's decision to endorse Dubya.

The one question/concern that I have with the early voting ( and I will be there on Monday, too) is the safety/security of the ballot box - overnight, and on weekends. I may go downtown to the courthouse, instead of the small local site. I am concerned about the security of that box(es).

should sew up the tight presidential race in Texas...

we are concerned here in Dallas that W will only win Texas by only 65% of the vote.

I wonder if I should dump my AJC (Atlanta Journal Constipation) and get a subscription to the Dallas paper... even coming a day late in the mail it might be a better read!

You could always check it out for free on the 'Net:

Actually, given its already low circulation numbers, the paper would be committing economic suicide by endorsing Kerry. Then, too, a couple of editors on the board are staunch conservatives.

Finally, although many in the Oak Lawn areas (near downtown) are potently anti-Bush, the majority of us Texans are conservative and growing more conservative every day. The paper will continue to bash the Bushes to satisfy the liberals' needs for a few morsels.

By the way, the mere thought (shudder) of a President Kerry would make us all puke on the hour 24 hours a day during his cowardly reign. I can hardly wait for Thursday to cast my early vote for the good man GWB!

Regards . . . Penny (from near Dallas)

I have been doing my early voting in Garland the last few years and they have had the touch screens.

I'll be voting in my little home town this year because they will do the early voting thing here for the first time. Not sure if we'll have the computers or paper ballots. I hadn't thought of that.

Tomorrow , Monday, October 18,2004 my son (who just recently turned 18) will vote in his very first Presidential election. He will be voting for President Bush. I am in no way telling him how much the POTUS is ahead in Texas!!! I am soooooo proud of him.
He thinks that Pres. Bush is one of the greatest men alive today (next to his Dad and Papa)
