Where Were You In 1976?
Me

It was Carter Vs. Ford, so where were you during the course of that election and when Carter claimed his victory(unfortunately). It was a pretty close race.

I voted for Carter for the second time actually that year. I also voted for McGovern years earlier in 1972.

I am sorry now, but then again, my vote for president here in this state has never really made a difference.

I promise that I will never do that again, vote stupid I mean.

It was a pretty close race.

So said the polls. They actually had Carter ahead. I can remember very clearly talking to a friend and say, how could these polls be right? How could Carter be ahead? Impossible.

Where was I. I was right where I am today - Conservative!

I was in College in California working to get Carter elected. It was my first election and I've grown up since then and voted straight conservative since Reagan.

I was getting drunk in college and chasing girls. Laughing that the US was almost certainly going to elect a peanut farmer to be President.

I was in my senior year of college and half-assed supported Carter. Until I graduated in May, went job hunting, and was told on every level that they had to hire minorities per Carter's "affirmative action" policy. Went to then Senator Metzenbaum's office, complained to his secretary and was told "no one ever told you that". In a moment of perfect enlightenment I saw how the world works and walked out of the office a Republican.

Working my tail off as a contractor, member of the L.A. County Central Committee, 43rd Assembly Committee, and State Central Committee, and working on local and state campaigns.

At age 39 I had more energy than I do now!

I don't really remember where I was. I was eleven at the time. I do remember where I was in 1980, when Reagan was elected. A friend and I were at the weekly pro rasslin' matches at the Louisville Gardens, when the announcement came on that Reagan had won. My friend and I booed and called Reagan an old man (Hey, we were fifteen year old punks at the time, and since most people in the arena were cheering the news, we, as teenagers do, wanted to be contrary). Over the next four years, I fell totally in love with the man (you know, as much as a dude can love another dude who he doesn't really know personally), and in 1984, then being old enough to vote, I proudly voted for Ronald Reagan.

I voted for Ford. It was my second vote for President. I wasn't a solid Ford supporter. I sensed a streak of liberalism in him, even in those days.

He had vetoed a few spending bills saying we couldn't afford them. He was WAY overmatched trying to prevent the Democrats from giving Vietnam to the communists.

In fairness to him, he didn't manifest himself to be an utter moron until perhaps 1982 or 1983.

It was January 1, my first day in California. The Rose Bowl and an earthquake in Anaheim remind me of that day.

I was working late that election day and on the way home I heard the terrible news, I was still living at home with my parents and when I got home my father was grief stricken, he said "Carter will be a complete an utter failure... God help us" :-)

History would prove my father correct :-)

"I was boarding the Freedom Train. Anyone remember that going around the country?"

Wow. I remember standing in line for a long, long time with my fellow 9th graders to board the Freedom Train. Can only remember 1 item in the Freedom Train to this day....Bob Lanier's size 22 basketball shoes.

Teaching mathematics in college. The head of the department (later college president) was complaining, "I can't understand how anyone with a PhD could vote for Carter!"
