Carter won in a close victory.

He defeated Gerald R. Ford, a likeable man, who nevertheless had some unfortunate episodes with his trick knee. Doonesbury portrayed Ford in an irreverent manner, but I don't recall any mean-spirited crap which is what characterizes Doonesbury today (and let's not forget the "Roots" lampoon Trudeau conducted). Ford took Trudeau to China (make that, "the taxpayer took Trudeau to China"). Saturday Night Live lampooned Ford as an incompetent debater, a foolish, childish episode which resulted in Chevy Chase' hospitalization and (he thought) a good reason to strike out on his own.

Ford pardoned Nixon.

Carter still barely beat him. :')
George W. Bush will be reelected by a margin of at least ten per cent

I hate this question.
I graduated high school in spring 1976.
I just realized that the guy I was seeing the last couple of months was born during my senior year.
Now I feel terrible. Sorta.

I was in college and all my stupid rich kid liberal friends were voting for carter. I told them then he was going to be a disaster. They didn't listen to me because, well what could a mere commoner know??

I was only a few months old, so I don't remember much about that election. :)

Whooping it up in wild-and-wooly Anchorage as the Pipeline project was wrapping up. (Great year!)

I'm not sure, I was probably either playing Greek Dodge w/my neighbors, playing war w/my cousins, or learning to ride a bike (yes, I was late).

Sounds awesome! ;-D

Hey frankly, even a spread of 4 years is bad when you think of childhood. Huge differences happen in a short time!

I was 28, mother of 2 small children, not interested in politics at that time. After 4 years of Carter I cast my first vote in l980.......been voting ever since and try and stay informed. Too bad it took a loser, idiot like Carter to open my eyes......his administration affected my family greatly just like everyone in the country at that time. Pray that the country doesn't make that mistake again.......like this November. Democrats have no business in the White House.

Terrible?

A 46-ish year old woman dating a 28 year old

You should feel great

Now if you were dating him when you were in college - that's a different story.

Engaged and was married in December. Voted for Ford. After a few years of the Carter fiasco, and no one would admit voting for peanut-man, I could proudly say, "Don't blame me. I voted for Ford!"

Actually he'll be 30 in Dec. I was 17 when I graduated. So it's all okay, right?
