Hillary Blasts Bush on Vaccine Shortage
NewsMax ^ | October 18, 2004 | Carl Limbacher

Posted on 10/18/2004 5:38:48 PM PDT by Kaslin

New York Sen. Hillary Clinton is blasting the Bush administration for the flu vaccine shortage, despite her own role in causing the crisis with her health care reforms in the 1990s.

"They're more interested in tax cuts for the rich than for flu shots for everyone who needs them," Clinton railed Monday afternoon at a press conference at New York's Ryan/Chelsea-Clinton Community Health Center.

"This administration has their priorities wrong," she added. "And we've really paid a big price for their negligence." But according to the Wall Street Journal, though Hillarycare as a whole crashed and burned in 1994, the former first lady was able to change the laws governing the manufacture of vaccines.

And the results have been disastrous.

During last fall's flu vaccine shortage, the Journal noted:

"The reason for today's shortage - as well as seven previous preventive vaccine shortages since 2000 - is that there are just five vaccine makers. This lack of suppliers is partly thanks to Hillary Clinton, who as first lady turned government into the majority buyer of vaccines and pushed prices so low as to make business unsustainable."

In July 2003 the Journal noted that the problem goes back to 1993, when Mrs. Clinton's "Vaccines for Children Program" was first implemented.

The vaccine crusade was being pushed at the time by Mrs. Clinton's Children's Defense Fund mentor Marian Wright Edelman - even though U.S. child vaccination rates in the early 1990s were considered relatively high by medical experts.

But that didn't stop Sen. Clinton and her "reformers." She pressured Congress to back her plan in a bid to make vaccines more available to poor, uninsured and underinsured children. In the process she turned the government into the major purchaser and distributor of vaccines.

Not only did Sen. Clinton's reform fail to result in any noticeable increase in childhood vaccination rates, it managed to drive down financial incentives for private companies to develop and produce vaccines.

A year after the Journal's report on Sen. Clinton's crusade, the number of manufactures producing flu vaccine has declined to just two.

No, my dear - you're more interested in obscene liability lawsuits than in enough vaccine for everybody, and that's why we are where we are.

Just another stupid, moronic comment from the liberal Dems...it fits.

I am a retired nurse/social worker....I now volunteer about six hours a day in our local clinic. All of our care center residents and our patients in jeopardy, will have a flu shot.

The reason why there are so FEW companies manufacturing the vaccine, is the cost of mal-practice insurance!!! It is NOT the fault of the administration! Take a look at John Edwards...he is a trial attorney - he and his ilk are responsible for the current problems in our health system.

Hillary Clinton is a liberal, bleeding heart, socialist/communist! (in my humble opinion, of course)

The case is not stated as strongly as it should be. The Wall Street Journal was lamenting that there were only 5 vaccine providers in 2003. There are only 2 providers now. But how many were there in 1993 BEFORE Hillary put her program in place?

The current articles on this subject also decry the declining vaccinations in the past few years. But again, what were the figures before Hillary put her program in place?

Note to Hillary: GW is President of the USA...he doesn't "manage" pharmecuetical companies in FOREIGN countries and it was the FDA that decided to NOT gamble on "questionable vaccines"...as for ALL THE AMBULANCE chasers that ran OUR pharmecuetical companies away...shame on you the lawyering pack of dogs.

Personally I think maybe we need to "weed out" some of the AARP Democrat whiners...swine flu has a nice ring to it...

Classic Hitlery. Get out in front and blame the other guy for the mess which is entirely of your own making. I made a mental note predicting this response from her as soon as I started hearing the drivers on this issue from professionals versed in the industry.

Flu vaccine production and it's dynamics lies entirely in the icey cold lap of frauline Hillary. Remove the profit which covers the production plan justification on limited lines of manufacture, and inflate the expense liability tail of vaccine liability and you get what you created! Nobody in America wants to make vaccines, nor could justify doing so to it's stockholders. Couple that with liberals complete lack of understanding the manufacturing process of anything and they are just confused as to why vaccine production is not just as simple as turning on a light switch? or manufacturing anything for that matter.......

And if the Witch has her way, all pharmaceuticals will go the way of the vaccines...the government will set prices artificially low; lawsuits and liability will remain major depressors of the market; R&D will plummet...and the American people will finally have the healthcare they deserve.

That's funny since she and her hubby are the cause of the shortage. Rush was explaining that today. They passed bills to limit the private sector from developing more vaccine.

Hillary used to be an attorney for Wallmart.....

You mean Wallmart doesnt have any....if GW Bush isn't Wallmart's supplier than
how (pray tell) is GW Bush responsible for any vaccine shortage...
any more than he is responsible for a shortage of aspirin cottage cheese or Viagra?

Oh I forgot in Democrat lexicon the Govt is expected to have everything 'we the people' need.

All 'we the people' have to do in return is sell our souls to get 'what the Govt feels we need' and WILL have.

Like you and Karl said Hildabeast ..."We are going to have to take stuff away from you for the public good"

imo

I agree. Too much vaccines weakens the bodies own immune system. This sort of hype should be for people with immune systems already in deterioration or next to nonexistant immune systems
