THE LEADER OF the Free World had one question for Chad Lewis.
"He wanted to know about T.O.," Lewis said. "He asked if T.O. was really as controversial as he'd heard. I told him most of it was exaggerated and hyped, and that I figured he could probably relate to that. He said he could."
Lewis, the Eagles' veteran tight end, had gone with his wife, Michele, to President Bush's appearance yesterday at the Evesham Recreation Center in Marlton, N.J., where Lewis lives. Lewis was recognized by campaign workers, Lewis said, and given an opportunity to meet Bush, just before Bush was whisked away by helicopter.
You'd think Bush might have more pressing matters on his mind right now, two weeks before he stands for re-election, pressing enough to preclude much awareness of Eagles wide receiver Terrell Owens. That was Owens' reaction, at any rate. (Feel free to think up your own really tasteless joke about Bush finally identifying a "weapon of mass destruction" and insert it right here.) But apparently, even Bush, the former owner of baseball's Texas Rangers, is plugged into the Birds' 5-0 start, which features 30 catches for 487 yards and six touchdowns by the Sharpie-wielding wideout acquired from San Francisco in March.
"That's when you know you're big time," Owens said last night, through an Eagles spokesman who sought his reaction on behalf of the Daily News. "When the president is asking about you in the middle of a big presidential campaign, that's when you know you're on your way to stardom. I may have to sign a book for him, send him a care package, with some T.O. hats and shirts. He can wear them on his morning jog."
No word on whether Bush might already have a copy of "Catch This! Going Deep with the NFL's Sharpest Weapon," Owens' autobiography, written with Denver author Stephen Singular, though Bush has indicated previously he isn't much of a reader.
Also no word on T.O.'s political leanings; in any case, he lives in the offseason in Lithonia, Ga., a state Bush is expected to win handily Nov. 2.
Lewis said Bush seemed fairly well versed on the Eagles, one of seven NFL teams over the last 70 years to win each of their first five games by at least 10 points.
"He said Andy Reid was a great coach," Lewis said.
He should come to Jersey and ask "is Pennington really that awesome?" Then chant J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets ,Jets.
I don't know. This could really hurt Bush in San Francisco. Niner's fans hate T.O.!
Sarcasm Off
AS and an Eagles fan and Bush supporter, I'm thrilled! I knew there was a reason I liked Chad Lewis!
Yes, both prospective voters will probably now vote for Kerry.
I think he could take Wisconsin if Brett Favre would endorse him!!!!!
Contrast that to Kerry, who saw T.O. play at Lambert Field one time. (at band camp)
Giving the Eagles Owens was probabley the stupidest thing that San Fran has ever done. Getting T.O. from San Fran was probabley the smartest thing the Eagles have ever done.
There is simply no way that Favre is not a conservative. I mean he has to be.
After this week, both Jersey teams will be 5-1. :-)
Probabley
Sports can be an excellent way to earn voters. I still think Rudy should do commercials in NY asking NYers if they really want to vote for a Red Sox fan.
Let's wait until he's faced Seymour, Bruschi, and Harrison...
E A G L E S EAGLES!!! WAY TO GO PREZ!!! Glad I voted for you already. I love my eagles!!!
Yeah, and the Daily News came out for Kerry during the primary - and has shilled for Lurch ever since. They have parrotted every Kerry talking point, and even had the nerve to blast Sinclair over Stolen Honor when they are acting in a blatantly partisan manner themselves. They even shamelessly ran an editorial over the draft issue yesterday.
And notice the "reporter" couldn't help getting an anti-Bush dig in:
though Bush has indicated previously he isn't much of a reader.
I am going for the Jets next week, but I honestly don't think that they can beat the Patriots. I hate the Pats, but they have an amazing team, and I think Pittsburgh coming of the bye week is gonna be the team that finally gives New England a loss.
Letting John York take control of the team was the stupidest thing that the NFL ever did. All the departures (Owens, Mariucci, Garcia) came about as a result of that.
I am sure "Lambert Field" Kerry knows more about Owens than anyone.
I agree. But sorry to say I hate the Eagles. Won't forget when their fans cheered when Michael Irvin (DC) went down. That was low. Boy the Cowboys s**k this year already. :(
