The combat pay sucks but all that money being earned in the combat zone is tax free. It's a big chunk that stays in the pocket. I'm surprised that the deployment would affect these people that much.

Probably they are in financial trouble with or without a deployment but the spin on this article is that it's Bush's fault for sending their loved ones to war.

I was under the impression deployed soldiers were actually paid on a higher scale (combat pay). Is this correct? If so, it doesn't seem they would be making ends meet if their spouse was home either.

Regardless, whatever we're paying them isn't enough. How about throwing those abusers of the welfare system off the public chuckwagon and giving these guys (and gals) a raise? ;)

M A N Y years ago, I was a military wife....we made $280.00 per month. I had a little garden behind my house to supplement what we couldn't afford. It was hard then, as it is now, but some of us grew gardens to supplement, we grew them alone and together. I furnished the spices, my neighbor grew beans, squash of all kinds, another grew potatoes and other root vegetables, another grew corn and things of that sort. We visited close by vegetable gardens and bought for cheaper than we could buy at the commissary and fresher. Some canned, I froze. We got by and never wanted to anything, when we transferred we gave to our sharers what we couldn't take along. Now there were some on base that lived from pay check to pay check and had a hard time making ends meet. I think some of these wives should take a lesson from those of us who didn't make what they are making today. True, we didn't pay as much for a loaf of bread as they do today, but in my neighborhood, I made loaves of bread that we all chipped in on. Military life isn't a bed of roses and sometimes we had to really pinch the penny, but when a group gets together and makes things better for one another they can do a lot. One package of seeds grow far more than the average military family can comsume, so share the seeds with others, depending on the size of the family. Plan ahead...don't wait for someone to do for you what you can do for yourself.

So, some 500 military families come to the Food Locker on base every month for free groceries, donated by stores, the military and the Boy Scouts.

So let's see, the groceries are being donated by greedy corporations, the military industrial complex, and an organization noted for it's discrimination.

Prisoners in jail get better treatment. If you deprive them of some weird vegan hallal kosher no salt meal you hear it immediately from the bloodsuckers- I mean lawyers.

That's not nearly enough to live on. A wife would have to work, but then who would watch the kids?

We do waste an extraordinary amount of money on illegal aliens.

There are a lot of familiy oriented projects on military installations. The families get a lot of help from these agencies, including child care centers. If the wife has to work, she can take advantage of these centers. Too many people have been led to believe our government MUST take care of them from cradle to grave. There is a thing called self accountability, the husband is busy doing the countrie's work, the wife should be able to do her part too. Now I'm not talking about all military wives, most of these women have backs made of steel. They handle the bills, take care of the kids, keep an eye on the in-laws, some even hold down jobs while their husband's are taking care of the country's freedom. I hold any military wife in high esteem against all others. These gals receive all of my praise...they are the best.
