Ex-Vatican ambassador slams Schwarzenegger's stem cell stance

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Anti-abortion activist Raymond Flynn, a former ambassador to the Vatican, called on Arnold Schwarzenegger Wednesday to "reconsider why you are a Catholic" after the California governor voiced support for a $3 billion bond measure to fund human embryonic stem cell research. Flynn, a Democrat and president of the lay Roman Catholic organization Liberty, Life & Family in Washington, questioned the governor's Catholic faith because of his endorsement of Proposition 71.

"I seriously question whether you understand the teachings of our Catholic faith on the importance of promoting a culture of life in our country," Flynn wrote in a letter he said he sent to Schwarzenegger on Wednesday.

A spokesman for Schwarzenegger, a Republican, declined comment.

Schwarzenegger bucked the state Republican Party Monday and endorsed the measure, which would make about $300 million available annually for 10 years for the research, and cost a total of $6 billion to pay back.

Did he do the same thing to Kerry and Kennedy?

Flynn should focus on all the Democrats who violate Catholic dogma. There are more of them.

He's been talking against small-potatoes Democrats in Massachusetts over the same-sex marriage issue.

No question about it. Knowing what we know now, if the election were held today, I would not vote for Arnold. If enough felt that way, Bustamon probably would have been elected. But McClintock would have been closest to the best choice for anyone with even just a minimally developed sense of right and wrong.

Flynn is one of the good guys on this issue. Being a pro-life Democrat politician in Boston is not the best way to get ahead in the world.

I blame Karl Rove for this fiasco. And now we'll have Specter to worry about too.

When it comes to understanding the political implications of abortion related issues, let alone the moral impolications, Rove is a complete moron.

If Bill Simon were governor of California, which he only missed by a couple of percentage points despite having his campaign funds chopped off at the knees by Rove and Parsky, you can bet he'd be out there campaigning for Bush. Arnold is just sitting on his hands.

McClintock was probably right when he said that if everyone following their hearts and voted for him, he would have won. Arnold's stem cell endorsement is still going to cost us $$. He presented as a fiscal republican. Also endorsed changes to the primaries. Kiss of
death!

Yes, he did. He has blasted Kerry many many times and has said unequivocally that Catholics can't in good conscience vote for Kerry.

Thank you much! I was sitting here trying to figure out if he was the person that had blasted Kerry and figured someone on here would know for sure.

I agree with his stand 100%!

He wrote a letter to Kerry that was mentioned on the front page of the Boston Globe in the past week or so excoriating him for having a religious litmus test that would disqualify believing orthodox Catholics from the Supreme Court.
