REYNOSA In a show of force, some 200 Mexican federal agents arrived Wednesday morning at Reynosa International Airport for duty in Military Zone No. 8 outside the city.
As part of an operation that officials refused to explain or comment on, another contingent of federal agents showed up about the same time at the Matamoros airport.
The agents reportedly belonged to Mexicos Agencia Federal de Investigaciones (AFI), and to the Policía Federal Preventiva (PFP), the Federal Preventive Police, both roughly equivalent to the FBI.
The coordinated early-morning operation appeared to be a display of force and increased vigilance after the wave of shootings and slayings linked to drug-trafficking that has erupted in the border cities of Tamaulipas state in recent weeks.
On the U.S. side, Border Patrol spokesman Eddie Flores said Wednesday that Border Patrol agents in recent days have noticed and received reports of an increased military presence on the Mexican side, and they have observed troop deployments at certain points.
Last week, Mexican Gen. Clemente Vega García, the secretary-general of defense, advised the national Defense Commission that special forces would be dispatched to Tamaulipas state to deal with the violence there.
Vega said at that briefing that the Mexican army has some 6,000 special forces operatives ready to confront drug cartels throughout the nation.
The stepped-up fight against traffickers was ordered by Mexicos civilian government, not by the military, Vega said at the briefing.
The years since 2000 have been marked by escalating violence among the Gulf Cartel, the Juárez Cartel, the Sinaloa traffickers and other drug players from Michoacán and Durango states struggling for position in the face of increasing government crackdowns, with the mayhem now reaching the border regions nearest the Rio Grande Valley.
Tamaulipas state government officials, working through Gov. Tomás Yarrington, have asked for federal help in fighting crime in the state a request Yarrington has made several times. The move appears to be voluntarily ceding state control to the federal government and now appears to have gotten a response from the federal government.

South Texas Ping!
They must be tired of robbing the good citizens of Mexico City and Monterrey. Obviously, there is money to be made along the frontera.
Are we sure it is drug traffickers and not islamic terroristers?
If some Islamic terrorist makes it across the border and does something disastrous, Fox's ass is grass, and the whole damned illegal immigration jig is up.
First, the US (look-the-other-way) government would have to go thru 1001 attorneys to prove the terrorist came up from Mexico. Almost impossible to do at this stage. Without our own troops on the border with shoot to kill orders, we're sunk.
Which will be next month's headline.

Maybe we are about to be invaded. Scratch that. It's already happened.
The amateur drug cartels take what belongs to Presidente Fox and they will have to answer to his "armilito" [Sp. = "little army"]. Of course, it may also be that for an extra fee, Fox has gauaranteed the al-Qaeda kerrorists and Fidelito [Sp. = "little Fidel"] that their agents will make it to the other side of the border as Fox promised and was paid for!
The jig is already up. Trust me, there are millions of us that have had enough of this lawless horse sh*t. Some of our traitorous politicos just don't get it yet.
So what. This is a case of one bunch of lawbreaking thugs replacing another bunch of lawbreaking thugs.
No, the jig is not up. If you ever have the chance drive to Douglas, Arizona. There you will see the world's largest car park loaded with Border Patrol vehicles. Now it doesn't seem to matter when you drive by, weekday or weekend, day or night, the lot is always full. Then ask yourself, what the Hell are they doing there when that particular region accounts for about 20% of all illegals entering the USA.
Look, let's be honest, if the military ever did decide to patrol the border they would probably do so with Abu Ghraib rejects.
Yeah, and your point is?
The jig is up meaning that this open border madness is now in the news every single day, and many, that may not even live in border states are hearing about what we've known for years.
Like KFI radio in LA for example, they are using *large* amounts of their air time, dedicated to this crises. Two years ago it was never discussed. Only our corrupt politicos continue to ignore this epic invasion, and now, even they are being forced to address this titanic lawlessness, or risk being taken off the government teet.
Yeah, that'll help. More like the Fox watching the hen-house.
It's like they sing in the narco-corridas "Los Pinos me dan sombra" --- The Mexican White House (Los Pinos) provides me cover.
There is a drug lord war going on all along the border --- things were disrupted in the big powerful Juarez cartel with another Carrillo Fuentes family member gunned down. You're right, the Mexican government is making sure their side wins.
Since the current Administration has no intention of controlling the border, couldn't we just privately bribe the Federales to do the job for us? At least we'd have a chance at getting the job done that way.
