"The Cascade volcanoes mostly ooze, and only sometimes blow themselves apart,"

They're still teenagers.

Regarding calderas - there's a monster one in New Mexico, north of ABQ.

Probably nowhere the size of the Yellowstone caldera, though.

John Kerry--I have a plan to more effectively deal with Mt. St. Helens and the Bush administration is at fault for failing to ratify the Kyoto accords that would have prevented this from happening.

You must not have been there recently. Tender shoots of trees and brushes are sprouting all over the place, and the area designated as a "monument" has been left untouched, leaving the dead trees lay where they are as a reminder to all the power of this devastating eruption. Lava in great quantities can travel far, and since, unlike Hawaii, there is no nearby Ocean to impede it's flow will eventually reach areas of thick forests, and there will be nothing anyone can do to stop its flow downhill, except extreme cold temperatures.

Thanks for reply. Just last summer, and I was struck by the amount of deadwood fuel removed from the terraine to the North in the last 20 years. Shoots and saplings, yes, but not what one would call fuel, such as that one saw, and still sees, in Yellowstone. Our difference may be one of perspective, or scale, and if it blows big enough, I'll agree with your scenario. But nothing so far has pointed to that in the near term.

On King 5 news this morning, they were showing this little remote controled plane that will collect samples. I have a hard time thinking that thing will survive a couple of NW storms. I guess if they fly it when it's only calm and clear, but then if it is calm and clear, they could just send a regular plane.

Out of all the volcanoes on Earth, Yellowstone wins hands down. A 60 mile wide caldera?

Actually that award probably goes to Toba in Sumatra, Indonesia.
