Public School Must Pay for Censoring Christian Student

A federal district judge has ordered Michigan’s Ann Arbor Public Schools to pay $102,738 in attorney fees and costs in a case involving a high school’s refusal to let a Christian student express her views on homosexuality.

In March 2002, at Pioneer High School’s “Diversity Week” program, Elizabeth “Betsy” Hansen, then a senior, was told she could not express her Roman Catholic viewpoint at the school’s “Homosexuality and Religion” panel discussion. The school also discriminated in limiting members of the panel to religious leaders who endorsed homosexuality, refusing to permit access to the panel for any clergy who would express another view.

...refusing to permit access to the panel for any clergy who would express another view.

"Diversity Week" evidently does not include diversity of opinion.

According to a public school district in Washington State, schools need only be concerned about offending witches. I've never heard of Christians getting such consideration. This ruling, however, is a victory nonetheless.

Hallelujah! But where in the world did they find a judge who was actually willing to apply the law? I'm calling Ripley's Believe It Or Not.

Diversity Week" evidently does not include diversity of opinion.

I wonder if anyone besides us ever considers the irony in that?

Not quite.

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. (Rev 21:8)

All this means is that the taxpayers get to pay the money.

What should happen is that those who denied the studen't rights should be fired and ordered to pay the $103,000 themselves.

As I said a few days ago about this case, I'd think that any judge, upon seeing the merits of the case, would be hard-pressed to find any 'nuance' to stretch into a legal or constitutional justification for what the school did. The school's actions were just overtly offensive and direct.

Not really getting their due. We need to sue for more than attorney fees. We need to sue them silly and not for chump change.

It's a small victory for Free Speach vs. democrat communist "only speak what is what we find acceptable" speach.
I point this out from time to time when I manage to log into DU, and I get booted off imediately. Soon, DU will have half the servers blocked, but that's part of my secret plan...

What's good is that this sets a precedent, at least in Michigan, which will make Christian haters think hard before they deny Christians their right of free speech.

This is probably as much as we can hope for. Perhaps when the Super and the assistant supers and a few principals don't have the $100K to pay for that cushy educrat conference they were planning on, they will feel the pinch.

Or perhaps they will just cut back bus service and reading specialists and go to the conference anyway.
